This came up in another discussion, so I am curious. I have been a vegetarian most of my adult life.

I try to avoid a lot of meat in general, but I don't single anything out. I was just at a barbecue sunday, for example, so prob will be avoiding meat for several days to come. Vegetarian + fish and maybe TINY quantities of meat until my next big carnivorous adventure

I went veg about 5 months ago and loooove it. I've had meat twice since but that was more a nutritional necessity than anything. I had salmon. It was kinda hard to eat but I felt like superman for the next 24 hours. I've since started taking Omega 3 and Iron supplements fairly regularly and it seems to have taken care of that. But yeah, once in a great while I'll be consuming fish or lean meat. For me alot of it has to do with my body chemistry but also the meat industry. And within that knowing just how comparatively unhealthy/chemically altered the meat we buy at the supermarket is and the lack of respect given to the animals. My feelings are those akin to native Americans. If I or a friend killed the animal fairly and in respect for the sacrifice I could eat it. Waiting for deer season, lol. Mmmmm, venison. Glad my bro in law is a hunter.

The non vegetarian meals I eat (once or twice a week) consist mainly of chicken! I louurve chicken! I never put on any weight no matter what I eat but still, red meat never tickle my taste buds so I hardly eat it. The weight thing also helps because most of the chicken I eat is cooked in mughlai style.

I am a sucker for mutton kebabs though, and my gf used to make a mean lamb!

I could just google it but prefer a conversation :) What is mughlai style?

Oh, the mughals ruled India for sometime, and they are a part of our culture here. In mughlai cuisine, you have dishes like, Chicken mughlai, Afghani chicken, biryani baadshahi (It's made from rice and lamb), boti kebab, Shahi chicken korma, and a lot of others. These are all made very spicy and ground spices are used in most.

I think you misunderstood my last comment, I said that it helps that I have a metabolism that doesn't let me put weight because the chicken I eat is mostly from mughlai cuisine, and thus contains a lot of fat (oil). It's not really for the weight conscious. :)

I am MOSTLY vegetarian. My diet consists of plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. I eat a lot of boiled greens (spinach, collards, horta, mustards, kale, beet greens, etc). I eat my handmade yogurt almost everyday. I eat raw nuts as much as possible [twss] instead of roasted and salted. Though the roasted, salted, and smoked almonds are the shit! I have recently given up refined sugar. I use coconut sugar in my oatmeal in the morning and thats it for the rest of the day usually. I will use honey and maple syrup sparingly.

On occasion I will eat meat if its given to me... like when my boss makes his killer bbq chicken and brings me some leftovers I will enjoy that. Also If I feel a bout of depression coming on I will eat some salmon in hopes that it will help my brain... I don't know if it works but it sure does taste good! If I haven't eaten meat in a long time I may allow myself to indulge in meat on special occasions or at restaurants where they you HAVE to get meat (Like Korean BBQ - thanks Hass). But then I'm back to my usual vegetarian'esque diet.

I used to be strict vegetarian and then vegan. Eventually I bet I will find my way back to that way of life.

In my work as a healer I sometimes use leather, feathers, or other animal parts to make fetishes, talismans, or other objects. The point of these things are to honor the animal in which they came from and use that energy for the Greater Good of all beings. The animal products are prepared responsibly... often from roadkills or discarded parts from various sources. If I wear leather for fashion it usually comes from a thift store from friends. Actually I'm looking for a leather jacket with fringe lol. I think I could rock it.

Mostly I think I'm trying to live in relationship with nature. I am neither above nor below nature. I respect and honor the beings that have been sacrificed for my sake... and I intend to use the nourishment as fuel to make the world a better place.

Good topic. Thanks :)

Growing up in the nations feed yard (Nebraska) it's pretty much impossible to avoid meat... tasty, tasty meat. I grew up on a farm/ranch and, hell, I even worked for Omaha Steaks for a short time. As I've gotten older I've begun to cut red meat from my diet, as my family has a history of colon cancer. During the work week I'll avoid red meats and stay lean, usually eating fish or chicken as a meat 'substitute'. On Friday or Saturday nights I'll indulge and have a nice porterhouse or a delicious cheeseburger.

ETA: I've often flirted with the idea of going vegetarian solely for the health and dietary benefits.

I voted "sometimes..." but I feel like I do it better than that. I keep kosher and didn't have regular access to kosher meat for the past 4 years or so. That said, I do make exceptions sometimes (not as a rule, just as a situation dictates) so I ate meat during those years sparsely and I now have access to a couple kosher butcher shops and delis. I still rarely opt for meat, though. I do eat fish but not very often. I eat eggs but not if there are traces of blood.

I consider animal use in what I wear, what products I use, and what I eat. Mostly I strive for sustainability in clothes and cruelty-free products. My sister is a hardcore vegan and has been for almost a decade, so it rubs off on me in some regards.

Vegetarians are the most unhealthy people! Every one I've seen were skinny with bad skin. Humans need at least some meat in the diet. If for nothing else, flavour! Once a vegan friend gave me lentil soup. Just lentils and water........YEECH!

Is this a serious response? because if it is I will have to practice a coping technique

The time that I was vegetarian was all because of the meat indusrty itself, I have gotten healthy and will no longer eat at a fast food resturaunt or by ANY meats from a supermarket chain. If I want a steak or something (still trying to avoid eating chicken) I will get it from the local butchers shop.

Hahahaha, that's not true. Some of the most beautiful people are vegetarians and have gorgeous skin. Sometimes it is the hormones in factory farmed meat that affects people's skins, certainly you can't blame it on vegetables. If it's not for you, that's fine. Yeah, lentils and water sounds nasty.

I think what you can tolerate has to do with heredity. Being Native American, I do really, really well on a primal diet. I'm very attracted to vegetarianism but unfortunately my body can't tolerate it. I'm gluten intolerant and hypoglycemic. I've been told by a nutritionist that this particular combination is quite common in Native Americans because processed high carb foods are a more recent addition to our diet. The theory behind primal eating is that our bodies haven't had time to adjust to grain products. That seems logical based on my experience because those of middle Eastern and European descent have been eating grains longer than Native Americans and seem to tolerate it more. Any time I've tried vegetarian, i end up in a face plant on the floor within 10 days at the most. So whenever I can I go primal. But I do try to keep it about 70% fruits and veggies instead of a true carnivore type diet like Atkins because I don't think that's healthy either.

My father is native American and says the same thing. Whenever he's tried to limit his meat (doctor's advice/cholesterol) he ends up gaining weight and having blood sugar problems. He goes back to eating more meat and his health is the best. He is a big hunter and manages to make it thru most of the year on deer and elk meat. Makes sense.

Might I suggest adding Pescetarian to the poll?

Been a vegetarian for almost 10 years (since I was 12). Switched from being Pescetarian to Lacto-Ova within the last three or four.

I started off with this whole mentality of saving the animals from cruel slaughterhouse fates... I've since learned that my actions do nothing, but since I enjoy my diet to this day, I see no reason to go back to eating meat. I at least like the principle behind it.

I would love to live in a world where I could raise chickens for my own eggs (I don't drink much milk, as I seem to be somewhat lactose-intolerant), but I don't think I could ever go full-vegan.

I think it comes down to HOW we are eating not necessarily WHAT we are eating. Are we eating in compassionate cooperation with nature to fuel our bodies in order to carry out our fullest potential in life? Or are we eating selfishly to solely satisfy our senses?

When I eat, I thank God for blessing me with the abundance from the Earth. I say: thank you for the oats and the bananas, thank you for the cinnamon and soy. That you for the chickens that the egg came from (or was it the egg the chicken came from???). I saw thank you for allowing this meal to fuel me throughout the day so that I can carry out the work that you are asking me to do.

When I eat meat I I talk directly to the Spirit of the animal and thank it for giving up its life. In return I can nurture the Earth so that the life of that animals descendants can live more fully.

I worked at a go-go bar years ago as a bouncer. The beauty of those girls is all fake! Lots and lots of makeup and poor lighting!
Take off the glamour and ol' Pam would look like just another girl at Walmart!
