Establish a pre-sleep routine. Some relaxing activity you do to unwind before bed time. Some typical ones are to read a book, or watch your favorite TV show before calling it a night. This won't fix the problem immediately, but it will establish a habit, and an activity that your mind will associate with sleeping.

1. Relaxing activity - Read a book, listen to some chill music, call your granny, whatever.
2. Routine - Do it like clockwork, always start and end at the same time whenever possible.
3. No distractions - Keep the internet, and cellphones, noisy music, cable TV, etc. put away when it's sleep time.
4. No stimulants - Save the caffeine for earlier in the day.
5. Don't eat too much - Food gives you energy, so don't have a big meal before sleep time.

If none of that works, time to talk to a doctor. Edited by Epoch

I have HUGE insomnia problems most of my adult life. I lay in bed and my mind races and I think about everything from the personal worries to really stupid stuff, like wondering if they will ever do a show with Bart Simpson as a teenager! I've taken everything from Tylenol night to Rohypnol (yeah, roofies) and they all work, for a time, then it is back to the same old shit.

The advice I have is to fix your bedroom so that there is no stimuli, meaning no computers, tv, video games. The bedroom is for sex and sleep only. Darken your windows (light prohibiting curtains if you can afford it, foil if you can't). Don't even try to sleep until you feel you can, laying there only adds to the frustration. Take a warm bath about 2 hours before and keep your room cool, that cooling down will help you nod off. Warm milk and turkey have tryptophan, that works sometimes, doesn't work sometimes. I have been told to avoid caffiene (ha, not gonna) and don't watch tv or be on the computer for an hour before bedtime. Reading something boring helps me to turn my brain off of other matters and nod off. Once I get into a routine, I sleep better and better but then something upsets the apple cart and I'm up all night again.

I hope that helps, I have gone for up to five days without sleeping and trust me, by that time you are completely crazy--seeing things that don't exist and talking all kinds of weird stuff.
