roastdawgg
Hey everyone. I m new to the forum, been trying to join for a couple weeks but the damn form was broken and wouldn't accept my registration. anyways have i got a treat for you guys. my roommate's dad bought a hookah like 20 years ago in saudi arabia. its 58" tall with a 110" hose about the diameter or my thumb. the hookah is solid brass with ornate hand painted decorations. quite a looker. i am no stranger to hookahs but this particular one has a rather odd feature. the bowl is H U G E!!! The bowl is about 5 inches tall and has a diameter of like 6 inches. if you put liquid in it i bet it could hold a cup of water easily. what were these people smoking out of it and how did they get a coal in it? i am definately posting pictures when i get home tonight but i thought i would put it out there for your guys to see if anyone has ever seen anything like it. my friends dad saw people at the time smoking out of them on street corners. so i know they are hookahs. best i can tell its indian...they seem to make the brass ones. right now i bought a metal coal screen and we put that int he bowl with the shisha under it and it works fine. but why is the bowl so big? it has a top for the bowl too...a metal lid. is this like a built in wind screen?pictures to come later tonight. roastdawgg
okay so here it is. my roomate dug up a picture from his email. the bowl at the top has a lid and the whole thing is hollow all the way down to the neck where it connects to the pipe stem. there is a built in metal screen with holes for the shisha to sit on. i bet i could get 100g of shisha in this thing with a few coals on top. i will get some closeups tonight. enjoy! its just been cleaned in this picture. 3 hours of brass polishing!

Lung Enema
My guess would be that it is Persian in Origin (Iranian). Nice piece!Be careful cleaning it as that can actually lower the value of some antiques.

Scalliwag
ewww, grape nuts cereal??? too dry for my taseoh, shit, look at that hookah too...how did i miss that
Tell a grape nuts fan to think about kitty litter when they are eating a bowl and it will break them of that habit! Badass hookah BTW!!!!
roastdawgg
okay here are the pictures i promised of the bowl. on a side note...i went to home depot tonight and bought some O-rings to help seal this drafty old pipe up some. previously this thing had many leaks. now its air tight and draws very nicely. still a little too big fully assembled though so we use it with the middle section removed and the bowl basically on the vase. so does anyone have any idea why this bowl is so big? wind gaurd? thanks.a little perspective on how huge this thing is.with the top on

brettK
it looks like a wind gaurd.. and maybe they had a screen that went down into it and they just put coals ontop...
Sonthert
My guess is Indian and, yes that is a wind cover, you'd put coal on the tobacco directly. Moreover, it looks to be a jurak pipe rather than a maasel pipe. Just guesses, mind you.
