SaintPendulous
A while ago i left my shitty ass job at the massage therapy school and have been scraping by on just Kmart I Got a call on the 20th offering me a job interview of the phone with Harrah's Casino, i aced the interview and moved onto a panel interview. I aced THAT interview as well and today had my third interview with them. However during the phone conversation in the first interview they asked the question "Do u you have any questions for us?" My questions were 1. I play softball on Sundays so can i work everyday but Sunday? to which they said "yes that shouldn't be a big deal" 2. I'm Catholic and i would like it if i don't work both major religious holidays and they said "as long as your willing to work the other non major holidays it shouldn't be an issue" 3. what shift will i be working? and they said "3pm-11pm" NOW.....today when i got into the interview the girl said i would be working on d 6pm-2AM shift, and would be working on Sundays and all the holidays and she doesn't know why the person who interviewed me over the phone would have said any of those things..... Naturally i wanted to tell her i wasn't interested and just walk off......however the job I would be doing seriously feels right, it feels like its a perfect fit for me, the money will be way better at 9 bucks to start and tips ( the guy showing me around said the LEAST hes ever got on a check with tips is 1200 bucks...) SO.....i'm really not sure what to do here...I'm torn between *its a perfect job for me with good money* and * its gonna take away a lot of stuff i really enjoy and look forward too* HELP!?! Plex
Even though they didn't make any promises about your requests being 'ok', that sort of jacking around sounds fishy. Makes me wonder about their management. If you are unhappy with the terms, work them out now before signing the contract. Even if you think the job is 'a perfect match'.. being jacked around in the beginning and 'submitting' to their terms out of desperation will likely lead to more problems and bad feelings later. I think your requests are reasonable. Do you know how they allocate the tips? are all the tips during your working hours divided among all employees of that shift? If so, 6pm-2am would probably be the best period for tips (but also the busiest)
Chreees
Sounds like they did a bait and switch on you. My boss did the same to me. I started out working second shifts, and two weeks after I started working he asked if I would work the graveyard shift just on Fridays and Saturdays until he could find a new guy to cover them. Well, two and a half years later, here I am, still working the graveyard shift. But I still do it because I need to pay the bills. It also gives me an opportunity to do school work at work. Once I graduate this fall, however, I'm looking for a new job. You essentially have to decide the pros and cons of your situation. Is it worth giving up your religious practices and hobby of playing softball in order to have a better job that you think you'd enjoy? The decision is yours and yours alone; no one can make it for you, unfortunately. I wish I had better advice, but that's all I've got.

Dr. B
Sign on, stick to your story about the interviewer's answers. Pay your dues while the process gets sorted out and see about talking to the hiring manager. At the least you can keep looking for another job if it seems like things aren't going your way. Scrappydoo
I think I would take the job. Maybe they assigned you to such a late night, figuring that you would be able to attend softball games and holidays and religious services. Don't think the most negative thing. I used to hire, train, supervise dispatchers for our 911 center. I would schedule people who had kid's sports obligations or stuff on nights sometimes because I had to and I didn't want them to miss it. Not having money problems is a huge stress reliever, you can still go to Mass and do most holiday things before you leave for work. GOOD LUCK and if you take it, congrats? PS--in the US, people rarely sign employment contracts or if they do, they don't hold water.
Cp44
If its your perfect job I would take especially in this economy, but keep looking for a job while you work.
Stuie
Hard Choice. Sacrifice, temporarily, what makes you happy and enlightened now for money to build up what you need. Sacrifice, temporarily, what is a good job now for what you really want to do in the future. All depends on your priorities. What's your most immediate concern now? Present of Future. If I was in your shoes and I would skip harrahs, or do it for a short time. Set a fixed time. Couple questions though. Did that guy work the same shift as you? Worked in call center and the say average incentive checks were this...yeah for first shift, not 3rd. Every worked that type of shift before? I worked 8-5am, I snapped in just under 3 months. Scrappydoo
[font="Georgia"][size="2"][color="#000080"]GOOD for you and congratulations! I think you will find that if you have a job you enjoy and enough money, other things fall into place. I keep seeing you and others saying you are sacrificing your religion. I don't get that. Catholic services are Sunday mornings. Not knowing when you play softball, I guess that would take the ax but I don't get how people are acting like you are turning your back on your faith for this job. Get there, make a great first impression and I'm sure in a very short time you will find a way to make it all work. Stuie is right, shift work isn't for everyone. Personally, I loved it! Like any job it's likely once you pass probation you'll be able to rotate shifts, and even trade days when you need to. But you have to pay your dues and get in first. You never know. You might discover that it actually works really well for you. 'Rani
