I've been re-reading the Harry Potter books while smoking (and almost only then), but I was at the very climax of the fifth book when my bowl ran out. I guess I'll be reading it on the couch for a while, can't very well just leave it until the next session.

On a related note, I once thought that my bad memory for books was a bad thing, but here it's good. Read the Harry Potter books when I was younger, started the first before the fourth had come out. Read through them all. But by now I only remember strong points, and so, as I'm re-reading them now, many things are like new. As far as the climax of the fifth book,

SPOILERS SPOILERS I recall that Harry's vision is a trap END SPOILERS,

but everything else is fresh. It's great.

I prefer to read when I'm smoking hookah. I just finished The Dresden Files series on my nook.

PS - Hookah smoke makes the nook turn pages. I had to get in the habit of blowing to the side when reading.

re-reading lord of the rings with some tangiers maraschino cherry laylina mango mix.

i like reading while smoking more than watching movies now. i used to over smoke when a movie gets intense, but that never happens with my books.

I have noticed the same thing on my nook touch.

I always smoke when I read. Helps me to concentrate.

i'm doing them out of order though. just finished the fourth one. i only read on my downtime at work though since i do a lot of traveling from place to place. i get 20 min here and there. it gets annoying when i get to a really good part.

I love re-reading books at later dates, you always seem to pull more from them a second or third time around.

Re-reading Atlas Shrugged at work during downtime (twelve hour shifts get boring) and pawing through Lovecraft in dim lighting while smoking. Then my neighbors (in an apartment) start to move stuff around and I get paranoid like I'm in Witch House or something.

Like peaceman use to do with movies, I over smoke during intense moments in video games or if I get too absorbed in my computer. I realize this is happening when I'm frantically waving smoke out of my face so I can see...and continue smoking...

I can't say that I've ever read a book while I smoked my hookah. Coincidentally, when I was an active cigarette smoker I loved reading and smoking at the same time.

  • 2 years later...

Love reading when I smoke, especially Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit.

I also like watching or reading game of thrones during a solo smoke sesh.

I also usually do my homework while I'm smoking. Its somehow relaxing in a way.

Sometimes I have the hookah going before I start the DVD so I read the title menu.  Also, sometimes there are subtitles if someone speaks a foreign language in a movie.

Smoking is gonna be the only thing to help me get through these philosophy books... Well it's either that or liquor.

Keep in mind that if you study drunk, you have to take the test drunk.  Not necessarily a bad thing.

I read most of the time when I'm puffing. Right now I'm reading Евгеный Онегин when I smoke. And by reading, I mean looking up every 3rd word in my English-Russian dictionary because my vocab skills are terrible.

Dune is awesome. I've only read the first book, but the rest are on my to-read list. Have you ever read any Dan Simmons books? I think you would dig them if you like that kind of sprawling epic. Most people recommend the Hyperion series, but I found Illium and Olympos much more interesting (and wayyyy more expansive). To give you the gist of it: humans made themselves into demi-gods using nano-technology and future-tech, terraformed mars, cloned the entire cast of Homers Illiad from the blood in the soil at Troy and recreated the Illiad on Mars, using Illiad scholars from the 20th century to see if it played out the same as in Homers epic. Sentient mining robots in Jupiter space (who are obsessed with classic literature) see the quantum disturbances caused by this and go to Mars to investigate. All the while, the "pre-humans" still on Earth are trying to figure out their origins and break free of their cycle of laziness, stupidity and gluttony while "monsters" from classic literature hunt them. I'm barely even touching the surface of these books. It's pure awesomeness, science fiction and fantasy melded into one big literature geek-out and written absolutely beautifully.

Currently reading Ready Player One, The Dark Tower book 4 and a bunch of comics (mostly focusing on The Unwritten and Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX run).
