Zildjian
So I have owned 3 KM hookahs now and love them to death. The biggest complaint I have about them is the coal trays seem to rattle when I draw on each and everyone. On my last one I put silicon feet on the bottom of the tray and that stopped the noise, but they melted when coals were in the tray after we were done smoking. The melted silicon got on the bottom of the tray and the tray stand on the stem, and I dont want that to happen to my new beauty. So I am looking for suggestions that you all have utilized to make that damn rattling stop!
Chreees
Hm. My tray doesn't rattle whatsoever. But since yours does, all I can think of is putting some pieces of paper towels under the tray to provide a little bit a padding and to prevent it from doing it. Right now that's the easiest fix I have in mind. I'm also trying to think of what it could be that's causing the rattling and what you could do to solve it. Cp44
Stop smoking so hard, done..fixed! Or you can do what Chris said and put a paper towel under the tray. I have two KMs and they dont rattle at all
Arcane
What about silpat? http://www.amazon.com/Silpat-Non-Stick-Silicone-11-75-Inch-8-25-Inch/dp/B0001RT42C/ref=pd_sim_k_2 Cut out a donut shape and that should eliminate the rattle. They're resistant to 480F, so maybe they wont melt.
FunkyBuddha
Second grommet to pin the tray in place? I'm sure you have an old one lying around.
thehelios
Just wedge a small bit of wet paper towel between the tray and stem and it should absorb all the "shock". Or as Cp44 said, stop smoking so hard. uJ

dizzbizz
I had this problem with my pharonie. What I did was get 4 pieces of duct tape and placed them under the tray. No one saw the tape because of the platform it laid on hid them and it stopped the rattling. EDIT: Also a concern of mine was the tape would melt and get gross fromt he coals sitting on the tray or something. The tape melted a bit but it didnt really mess anything up. I kept the same pieces of tape on there for a long as I owned the pipe and it was fine.
Zildjian
right but could you remove the melted tape?
dizzbizz
I dont know. I sold it. I put the tape on the tray though, not the stem. I don't see why you wouldnt be able to take it off. I mean it might be gooey but get some goo gone and it'll come off.

Coyote
Yeah my tray rattles too... it wasn't so bad until I was thrashing around violently in my sleep and kicked my KM over and bent the tray Anyway I have some of this stuff at the castle [the building I manage] and I wonder if it will work if I put a few squares under the tray: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100090883/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
Zildjian
i think it would melt katie. What I think I might do is get a dowel rod, cut a small even circular piece, then stick the silicon feet onto that, hot gluing the wood to the tray. that way the cheapest part gets tainted, and the stem stays fine. vendetta_revived
Don't the paper towels work?
Chreees
Evan, I think you're making this way more complicated than it has to be, haha. Just put some damn paper towel pieces underneath the tray and call it a day.
Zildjian
the problem with that is i have to replace them after each session. its not hard, just inconvenient. i would rather make something that lasts and only have to do it once, ya know? IainUM
all your problems can be solved by wet paper towels.
Zildjian
i actually figured it out, needing nothing. we have our hookahs on a coffee table when we smoke and the coffee table's feet run the length of the width of the table. if the hookah is in the middle of the table it rattles because of extra vibration, but if it is near a foot, no rattle (more stable underneath). Problem solved.
