Back Here. Looking For Advice On Best Bowls?

Recommended Posts

hi all. Haven't been here for some time now.

I was just browsing and looking what people use now, and wanted to get some advice:

whats the best bowl out there now that people use? I have a medium Tangiers Funnel with a scalli mod just sitting. I haven't used it in a long time for one reason: too big for one session. And I usually like to put new tobacco for a second session (I don't know why...I just can't smoke the second time without putting new tobacco). So basically it's a waste. So i've been using regular porcelain bowl for a long time now.

I use KM and Mya. Tobacco that I usually smoke is AF double apple, grape+mint, strawberry, and, of course, Starbuzz Blue Mist.
For coals, I use the flat coconaras.

Trying to enhance the flavor, of course.

After browsing a little, I see that a lot of people like the Crown micro bowl. How is it compared to small tangiers funnel, or any other good bowl?

Any help is appreciated.

Tangiers Small Phunnel. Or get a Crown Signature Phunnel and ask Santino to make it the size to fit about 25g and you'll have a phunnel that's comparable to a Tangiers Mini Phunnel. That's what I plan on doing soon, even though I already have a Tangiers Mini. :P

I was thinking about Tangiers Small. Is Crown Signature any better? Would I be able to use the Scalli mod that I have with Crown signature? I like it because of the whole "sucking in the foil" thing, and it makes me think that I keep some of the ashes out from going into the base...

oh, and if you guys are going to recommend a bowl, maybe you can also tell me what coals to combine it with.

On my regular porcelain cheap bowl I use two Coconaras (flat), or in my last order I had Coco Mazayas - cubes).

No, not really any better. About the same really, just different bowls. You may be able to use the Scalli, but I'm not exactly positive.

Coconara flats or Cocomazaya cubes will work excellently on either the Small or Sig.

Tangiers small and exotica finger coals.

I also like Exoticas. Good coals.

id reccommend a phunnel or vortex for the AF or tang. I like a standard egyptian for drier tobaccos like nak.

I'm piggybacking because I'm looking at getting a bowl to go with my new hookah (that'll be a different post). I am looking at:
phunnel/vortex - I know they're different does anyone have any preferences and why?
mod w/built in cover (http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-980-ultimate-combo-hookah-bowl.html)- I like that because I'm not the most graceful in the world and I was reading coal horror stories last night

Should I get one of each?

If you have spare money to throw around, I'd get one of each. I'd rather have a Vortex than a chinese knockoff phunnel, but the official Tangiers phunnels are the best.

And that Ultimate Combo Bowl is pretty nice, just watch out for the bowl getting super hot.

I would only get the Tangiers Small Phunnel bowl. Last bowl you'll ever need.

I still like the way the cheap Egyptian clay bowls smoke. I own a Tangiers small phunnel, and it's a great bowl, and I use it for the Tangiers stuff. Everything else, though, goes in the regular clay bowl that came with my Temsaah. I get great results; it's nice and shallow, heats up quickly, has a nice wide rim to balance the coals on, and the tobacco cooks all the way through. They're only like 4-5 bucks too, better than shelling out 10-15 for the Vortex that gets really inconsistent reviews. I am very interested in getting one of Santino's glass bowls, though.

KyIe's mantra: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I don't know how this bowl with the built-in cover works, I would think thou that the cover is too small, and you would need to use a very specific amount of coal to fit under there. So basically, they would need to be right in the middle of the bowl. I think it might be hard to manage heat properly.

can someone measure the diameter of a small tangiers phunnel please? I am looking at one website, and it says that its 3 inches, which is what my medium phunnel is (at least I think its medium)

update: nevermind, found it in the review section. Edited by adike

actually, does anyone have this Havana Phunnel bowl that Hookahset sells? http://www.hookahset.com/Havana-large-Funnle-bowel/531/

its pretty cheap, and I wanted to try a smaller phunnel, but I don't know if the difference is worth it between a small and a medium Tangiers. So if anyone tried the Havana and says its close to a Tangiers, I might try it since its so cheap.

Havana phunnels are huge actually, from what I've heard.

How small do you want to go? How long do you smoke for?

I have a crown micro phunnel and it lasts me some 1.5-2 hours when I am smoking AF and 2.5-3 hours when I am smoking tangiers, so if you smoke for that much time in a single session, then go for it, and if you like to smoke for a longer period, then get a Tangiers small.

I should also mention that I did ask Santino to hook me up with one of his larger micros.

well, see here is what I do:

with a regular AF and a regular egyptian bowl I smoke it for one set of coals (2 full Coco cubes), and then I take out the tobacco and put new in. I rotate coals all the time. Lasts me usually about 40-50 minutes. Probably have 20% of good tobacco left, but I don't bother separating it. If I use another set of coals, it starts burning after 10-15 minutes.

I just tried smoking with my old medium Tangier Phunnel with scalli mod, packed it with AF (about half the height of the bowl) and put 3 halves of a Coco cubes (first time I tried cutting them in half). Lasted me about 40-50 minutes.
I had the coals at the same spots all the time, and now half of tobacco is still untouched. I assume I can put another three halves and finish the remaining tobacco. Spots which I smoked still have tiny bits of good tobacco underneath which will probably be wasted.

So, my question now: should I continue using the medium phunnel and just underpack it a little (I read somewhere that this can be done), or should I just try a smaller bowl... what do you think personally?

Here is a picture of the remaining tobacco. See how once I take out the burnt pieces - there is still some tobacco left underneath. I hope that explains my concern a bit better.

Well if you like to do that, then by all means, go either for crown micro classic (one coal bowl), or a crown micro phunnel! I don't know about the crown micro classic, but my micro phunnel holds 15gm tops and smokes like a boss! You won't be wasting much tobacco with either.
