SirBlue
In a different thread I commented that after surfing the forum at work I gained a strong desire to smoke some shisha, so I called my friends to come in after I close shop with a hookah so we can have a relaxing session. I closed shop just on time, with everything clean and waited to my pals. When they arrived, we placed the coals on the stove, opened the hookah box, and realized instead of the vase, there was monopoly money and LED lights. Friends dad has successfully trolled him and took the vase out on the previous night. #trolldad. BUT we weren't there to give up. We improvised in the time of need. 4L milk jug and some tape made a vase that gave us better smoke than the previous one. So, in what occasions did you have to or choose to throw your handyman skills down on the table and save the night or make it better? Picture fully related. DrSmokes
Badass. I've only had to find air leaks in hookahs and hoses...I've used anything from duct tape, to scotch tape, and even plastic wrap with rubberbands!! Nothing as killer as your vase
Satou
The tip of our hose basically fell off of our hose component and we had to get electrical tape to stick it back on. and it still works pretty great.
Andrew Roome
The only real improvising I've done is using tin foil as a wind cover.
Hassouni
Lebanese glass being hard to find here, I've twice used one of those big 2-litre fresh-squeezed orange juice bottles, the opening is big enough with a little tape jammed in
angekfire
I've done my fair share of improvising. I brought my hookah to a party and the vase broke in transit. We ended up finding an empty jack daniel's bottle that fit it perfectly with no modifications. The next time I used a plastic V8 juice jug, that worked alright with some electrical tape to seal it up. I've patched up some leaky hoses with electrical tape, masking tape, packing tape or duct tape, on various occassions. To fix leaky hose ports I've used everything from chewing gum, to duct tape, and as a more permanent fix, epoxy putty. To plug empty hose ports I've used duct tape, wet or dry paper towel. Epoch
Ran out of charcoals one time. Resorted to roasting sticks in the oven and using them as charcoal. Tasted like smoking a camp fire.

Chreees
This is the only improv I can think of that I've ever done: I couldn't afford a windcover at the time. Bawhee
I dont think I have it anymore, but ill look around a bit later today... I made an attachment that fits all regular sized plastic bottles and makes a downstem into the bottle and the top part is made to accomodate a MALE bowl (cos at the time when I was making it I only had a male bowl that I broke since then). Then I poked a hole in the bottle and used a garden hose piece (cut to be hose length and thoroughly washed and boiled) and some tape to make a hose. Worked like a fucking charm! EDIT: I guess the relevant part here is that the bottle attachment piece is made out of a bottle cap, 2 CD cases, an empty bottle that had screen cleaning fluid in it and tape. Also I foudn it so Ill just go drink a bottle of something and add pictures soon Edited September 12, 2011 by Bawhee
atalanta
In another thread someone mentioned that they didn't have foil and used a fork to hold their coals. Made me wonder how well an absinthe spoon would work (yes, I have many laying around, some of those designs are very cool!) I could see improvising a bowl with an egg shell - carefully poke a hole both ends and empty the contents (put toward an omlette or scrambled eggs) rinse it out. carefully enlarge one hole to fit the stem of your hookah. carefully enlarge or cut off the other end so you can gently pack it (but try to remove the internal membrane first, it may affect the taste). Foil and place on hookah. It should work I would think.

I'll have to try this sometime and see if it can be done or if my idea is totally off. It would also depend on the egg. Some shells are much tougher than others. I'm still waiting to joytron's coconut and hard-boiled egg concoction (that's what made me think egg shell).

I could be wrong, but I took what he said mostly as a joke! Still waiting on the pics though. Personally, I don't think that an eggshell can take that much heat without anything happening to it, or it having enough conductivity for the tobacco to smoke.
Conductivity - how much conductivity does a fruit bowl have? I wouldn't think much but people use them a lot it seems. Tight - Hmmm. The fork post that started this wouldn't have been a tight cover. But thank you for pointing these things out. I'm still a noob so these things wouldn't have occured to me yet. But we're also talking improv, so the smoke doesn't have to be perfect. I googled it and it turns out this isn't a new idea. There were a couple hits for egg shell hookah bowl.
