jrohrer91
So I have read up on this forum for a while when i bought my first hookah and learning what hoses and coals to get, but now i am running into a problem. I am using a generic porcelain bowl, coco nara coals, and fantasia shisha. I lightly pack my boals like it says and i think i am doing everything right from what ive read up on here. Everyone always says how their bowls last over two hours but mine die after 1 all the time I am using a three hose hookah i don't know what brand i bought it at a head shop. I feel like an idiot asking this cause im sure there is a simple reason as to why its not quite right
Hassouni
A lot of people smoke out of funnel bowls which make the tobacco last longer. An hour isn't too bad for a regular bowl. Usually by the second round of Coconaras in a regular bowl the flavor has already diminished
Zildjian
their bowls may last 2 hours of continuous smoking, but their coals do not. do you mean your coals die after 1 hour or no more smoke after 1 hour?
jrohrer91
There is no more smoke, the shisha is hard as a rock and totally black, there is no flavor left
S3cretz
Its the funnel or vortex bowls on average they hold close to 50g of tabacco depending on how you pack it. A normal bowl hold 15 to 20 if you push it 30 grams. get a bigger bowl have a longer session. There are other factors but to a beginner the amount of tabacco is going to be the deciding factor. Stuie
That's normal. The 2+ hour range is with phunnel bowls and multiple sets of coals. Fantasia lasting in an hour in a normal Egyptian and it turning into a puck is perfectly normal.
jrohrer91
Ok guys thanks alot for your help im looking into getting a new bowl is there any preference over a vortex vs a phunnel?
Stuie
Phunnel has better Heat Retention and all around better design for smoking.

S3cretz
This forum will be able to better advise you if you get a phunnel as most of its users prefer phunnels. I prefer a vortex for things like af an nak over a phunnel however. But wetter tabbacos deserve a phunnel.
Hellz
Fantasia I'd definetly recommend a phunnel, ON my small, smoking tangiers I've been able to pull 6 hours easily. Just gotta follow the advice here lol. I have a vortex too, and honestly I dont for it. If your smoking with a 3 hose in a group, I'd recommend a medium phunnel. But as far as a generic mod/egyptian bowl I'd say 1 hour is pretty much the normal. So it's not that you are doing anything wrong. It's just the design of the equipment you are using

As for how many you need, just experiment a bit. 2 - 3 is usually a good number for most bowls.
Hassouni
I think black and pucklike after an hour is a bit much, you may be putting too much heat
Satou
I think black and pucklike after an hour is a bit much, you may be putting too much heat
I'd have to agree, my normal Egyptian clay bowls do not turn black and puck like after an hour smoking them. That it probably means that you are loading too many coals on at a time and burning it faster which also makes your smoke quite harsh. Usually only the top part gets crispy and the small amount at the bottom is still moist-ish. I personally wouldn't recommend an head shop hookah at all because later on they tend to crap out relatively fast (this is from personal experience in having a generic, head shop hookah as a first hookah). Also another non-recommendation is not to have a three hose hookah as a first time - learning hookah and single person smoking hookah. The best for learning are usually smaller, one hosed 'pumpkin' esq ones like the Bambino - I learned off of a tiny hookah and learned well lol. Unless the other hoses or outlets have been sealed /plugged up well enough not to leak on your current hookah.
jrohrer91
well thats because i was using huge quick light coals im hoping that will change with my coco naras, and also, I have the following brands of shisha : Fantasia, Romman, Al Fakher, are there any other reconmendations for brands that i am missing? I have heard starbuzz isnt to bad, is it worth tryin out?
grock
Ive actually found my CN's to be hotter than my previous quick lights I use. They are some powerful coals. Starbuzz isnt half bad, but its a lot of money in my opinion. Im a huge fan of all the brands you have listed, in addition Tangiers is a commonly used shisha for me as well. I know not many people recommend it, but I also enjoy packing up a bowl of Nakhla. Packed right with some good coals, and it can definitely yeild some nice results. Tried Nakhla Mizo Lemon recently, tastes identical to yellow Gatorade.... Not half bad.

(took a long time to get the hang of this)
mushrat
Too much heat is very likely. Im going to double check a small thing, your other hose ports are blocked somehow when its only you smoking right?
