atalanta
One topic that I've seen come up is "how safe is it to use Aluminum Foil because of its link to Alzheimers?". I admint, I buy into the Aluminum and Alzheimers link, try not to use aluminum pots, make sure deodorant doesn't have aluminum, don't cover my grill in foil, etc. So I was wondering about what to use to cover my bowl. I saw the post from about a year ago where someone bought a brass screen but she never posted how that worked (I may hit a hardware store and give it a shot). Copper is kind'a looked down upon because of toxicity issues. Gold, Silver, Platinum would be ideal since they are pretty non or low reactive. But with gold running at over US$1k an ounce, that's a bit pricy for a screen (though I was wondering about using the filter part from gold coffee filters?) and platinum is worse. Silver can be done and I could see that for some of your more high end hookahs (like a medusa or porche?) Niobium and Titanium are what they use to do medical implants (as well as 316 stainless steel) because they're also fairly non-reactive. They can also be heat/electrically treated for some nifty color designs (I love rainbow niobium). Where am I going with this? One of the things I do is chainmaille jewelry. I work mostly in anodized aluminum, but also do silver, titanium, and bronze. One of the things my supplier has are scales for scale maille. What I was thinking of was making a screen from the scales. Not aluminum, but another metal. The place I get them has sterling, titanium, brass, bronze, and 410 stainless. So what are people's thoughts on "other than foil"? I'll have to make a mockup to show what I'm thinking (not smokable since I only have anodized alumium scales at the moment). I can also do a fine mesh instead of scales if something like that would work. (Some of the other metals in my topic title? There is no way they would be good as screens - lead? No way!) Hassouni
You know, you need to vaporize the aluminium for it to get into you, and that happens at temperatures far higher than your charcoal produces

It should be noted that it would need to melt before vaporizing.
Zildjian
have you looked into glass? they are readily available and supposedly do pretty well.

king_lunchb0x
i do agree with the mob on this, it must vaporize for it to really be absorbed. I have only seen foil melt once on a bbq..bought some 99 cent foil and holy shit that thing was like the Hindenburg. So from now on I use only heavy duty foil. Of course we could all be wrong and you could be right, but it wouldn't matter cause we won't remember!!! side note..Glass screens are pretty good and few companies can and alrady do make them, just a thought
claytronmeans
You make sure that there is no aluminum in anything that you use, yet you work mostly in anodized aluminum?
S3cretz
The problem with most* metal is when it oxidizes and for metal to oxidize you need a lot of heat a lot of oxygen preferably only oxygen atmosphere. I feel asif most* metals should be good. * excluding obvious things like tin and copper and lead... anything with a low melting point.
atalanta
I'm thinking that maybe brass or bronze would look cool. This is more as a crafty idea than anything else. I probably should have left off the opening paragraph in this post, it seems to have made it go in other the direction than I intended. And I can't find a glass screen without getting a custom one (though maybe those glass candle drip catchers would work)

atalanta
SCA?
LOL Funny you should ask that, our troupe is dancing at a local renfaire this weekend. I've not been to War, but I really need to since that's near where BF's from. In all honesty? No, I'm not SCA but I have on occasion costumed for some (I also do leatherwork), I'm giving my cousin (who I think is) pointers on maille, I've taught maille, and I've been mistaken for a Tuchuck (BF used to hang with them at War, he isn't SCA either). So I'm pretty close to SCA without having to deal with the authenticity nazis

LOL Just a costumer (http://www.costume.org/) as a hobby (but I quit the guild when it got too political) Edited September 14, 2011 by atalanta
