Brass Rings For Heat Management

Recommended Posts

Hey all. I thought I would share a technique for heat management for those who might find that CCNs burn to hot. This method is adapted from the foil ring method which works well if you are having trouble with burning/overheating. However, I found the foil rings weren't stable enough for me.

In my case I was using a shallow chinese phunnel. Most heat management skills I have tried up til now in this bowl with CCNs just didn't work.

So anyway, instead of foil rings I got my hands on some brass air pressure valves, took them apart and used them in place of foil rings. I used 3 here which might have been a little overkill but it still didn't burn. I used a windcover to get it started and then took it off about 10-15 minutes into the session. No burning, thick clouds, great flavor from Tang Indian Summer noir. Anyway, here is the pic...

I could have used 2 coals but I used 3 for some reason... I can't remember why. I might have been about to pack the egyptian, put coals on, then changed my mind at the last second and didn't want to waste the coals. Sounds like something I would do anyway...

Have you tried messing with half coals?

I've never cut a ccn in hair because it seems like a hassle and i don't want to get my nails messed up. But when I turn the coals on the side they still heat up too much. I think brassrings is a good solution for me because its fast, clean, and I know that it works for me.

Pretty coal idea! I have a indian brass bowl and noticed that there is a bit of an odd flavor transfer. Have u noticed anything like that once the brass has heated up? I may have to give this a try! I would also think it would extend sessions if this is succesful. Im sure that the brass doesnt heat up as much as the coals. Idk ill check out home depot and see if this works for myself! never knock till you try it!

Looked around my garage for some, Didn't have any but I did find something that works just as well. I think someone else did this before.
