Netflix

I can't believe no one has brought this up yet.

So a Couple months ago Netflix jacks it's prices for DVD delivery.

Then in it's wonderful apology style this past week... to summarize... sorry for not keeping you informed about the rate hike and it's benefits, now we are going to split the company.

WTF! Seriously?!?!?! What a great F@#$)* Apology that was.

The reason I am with Netflix is because of both services available in one spot.

I can't comprehend how splitting the companies makes better business sense. It's like Sonic separating it's drink menu from their food menu and making 2 separate locations.

Not to mention Netflix forgot to trade mark their new stupid name, and will probably fork out a fortune to some blogger to get his twitter account of the same name.

Here's some stuff for fun and information.

Their business strategies as of late have been horrible. Their stock value has dropped over 40% since the mail-order dvd price increases. I think they want out of the mail-order side of things, that's the only way price increases and now splitting would make sense. I wouldn't be surprised if very soon after the split they sell the dvd side of the company entirely.

I do not like the changes for obvious reasons....but that's not to say I can't understand why they are doing such things. Before I get destroyed for playing devil's advocate, I don't like the changes, no one does (unless they liked ONLY streaming or ONLY DVDs).

Everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING revolves around streaming. That's the future of media. Unfortunately production companies hate that the future is streaming media and making it an uphill battle. The price hike is, basically, to get more money to pay more companies for licenses to stream their content. It's not necessarily to turn huge profits like gas companies, it's funding expansion in an industry that is fighting tooth and nail to resist it. The split, according to an article I read, is so that Netflix can give more concrete data to production companies containing information about how many people really stream their content, as opposed to have DVD's. They also want to build brand recognition (which they already have, but whatever) to separate streaming from hard media.

Long story short, Netflix's biggest complaint from users is lack of streaming media, well streaming media is extremely expensive to acquire, hence the price hike. Furthermore companies are still trepidacious even when offered millions and millions of dollars and want more data, so that, plus the brand recognition, explains the split.

The even shorter story: as consumers we want, and always will, more for less. More content. Less money and hassle. Unfortunately this is reality and it takes money to fund improvement.

The shortest story: the company split is stupid and unnecessary.

I've been with Netflix since almost the beginning. My favorite part is the DVD in the mail since their streaming content, IMO, leaves something to be desired. I don't mind the having to wait 28 days for new releases, if I was so hot for a new release, I would have seen it in the theatre.

The rate hike. It's not that much of a hike, depending on your plan. Now that I have a real job, I bumped my plan from 1 unlimited to 4 unlimited (hour train commute is a good way to watch movies, and if I get into it, I finish it at home). The rate hike for the 4 plan is about $2/mo. Not too bad, IMO.

The new name, now that is stupid. And splitting to two separate companies, that's just beyond stupid. Sure everyone wants to log into two different accounts on two different sites to do one thing - manage my viewing content. My time to renew is coming up in a couple days and I'm going to drop the streaming content since we've watched less than a dozen items streamed since they began offering it (if there was wifi on the train, that would be different).

IMO (lots of that in this post), they should have kept the Netflix name with the DVD and changed the name of the streaming. The streaming is the new segment, give that the new stupid name. Oh, and stupid names seem to be the thing now - SciFi changed to SyFy, Sleuth changed to Cloo, and I think there's a 3rd channel getting a dumb name (all owned by the same company).

I like Netflix and I'll stick with it. I tried Blockbuster and didn't like - took forever to get DVDs, half of them came in unplayable, and when I sent them back they "got lost".

I'm only signed up for streaming, so I kind of ignored all the hullabulloo...

I've not checked recently, but I think hulu has most of the shows that Netflix does...if so, I may drop Netflix altogether. But, hulu does lack good movies...which is Netflix's only saving grace.

kind of a pain in the ass to me. Splitting it in two, Know i will have to setup all new info on the quikester stie ( or what ever it was called). I may consider dropping it all together, Im hoping they will put a little bit newer movies. I don't watch much tv shows on it, so I just may get stuff from redbox instead..we will see

I'm not going to lie when I say that I don't understand why people pay for Netflix...

-You pay to stream movies, or television shows that can easily be streamed from the big vast ocean known as the interwebs for free?
-You pay for them to treat you like garbage consumers, price hiking you on the drop of a dime, so that they can send you shoddy scratched DVD's or, charge you even more for Blu-Rays if that is your thing.
-Torrents? If your looking to go that route, then WTF are you doing with Netflix?
-Half the time they don't even have the newest movies to stream, and as far as im concerned their stream page is useless without them. HORRAY I CAN WATCH MOVIES THAT ARE ON TV LAND OR TBS EVERY DAY!!!

I dunno guys, maybe its just my mind set, but paying for Netflix is just silly.... Edited by A13lackFish

Hopefully if all the rumors come true I Might grab the 10" Kindle Tablet that comes out next year. Comes with Free Amazon Prime Account so i can watch on my Tablet, PC, or TV. They don't have the Content like Netflix yet, but it's definitely cheaper.

RedBox Streaming I waiting on to see how that works.

Wish I had DISH so I could try out Blockbuster.

Sad thing is, most of the people I know are thinking about this.

This came up at work the other day. Now I converted down to DVDs only mainly because I never watch the streaming - the price difference was like US$2 (walk instead of take the subway one day a month makes up the difference) so if I did do streaming, it wouldn't be a problem (maybe if there was wifi on the trains, but there isn't) And the PITA with having to log into 2 sites, really killed it for me.

The guy with the "mac hookah" does the Amazon Prime streaming in addition to his Netflix DVDs. Now I might look into that, especially since I'm thinking of "paying back" BF and getting him a next gen Kindle this year for the holidays.

Some movies/shows on Netflix aren't readily available as torrents.

Additionally, I can start a stream of Sons of Anarchy faster than I can download the torrent.

Torrents...really? ISP's have been cracking down on users left and right. And now that they are allowed to keep the data on each customer a few years even after they leave their service, you can still get in trouble years down the road.

There's plenty of movie streaming sites out there that won't get you in trouble, just won't have the higher quality you would get from torrents. There are better sources out there that won't get you caught and give you the highest quality...though if you want them fast, you pay a price to use those services. I think I pay around $50-70/year to use it and have access to anything you can dream of.

Every movie/show is readily available as a torrent. I can mention movies such as Transformers the Dark Side of The Moon that was released as a DVDrip 3 days before it even hit shelves. Let alone shows like Sons of Anarchy that you can easily get seconds after they finish airing on the same day... As for connection speed, well that will all depend on who you use :P

And regarding ISP crackdowns, so long as you use specific programs, and aren't foolishly idiotic about your torrenting the odds of you getting caught out of the billions is slim. For example, lets say a torrents comment says "dont download my ISP contacted me telling me to cease and desist!" then you probably shouldn't go ahead and download it.

Netflix, again, to me is quite the ripoff unless your doing it for the ship to home service, because I would not want to pay to not have an entire selection of new shows at my disposal... as much as I like Cheers, its just not what i'm looking to watch all day lol

BTW Redbox raised prices, wtf? $1.50 for movies, and $2.00 for games apparently (didn't even know they had games haha)

That's good news. I may add streaming back someday then (if there was WiFi on the trains, it would be tomorrow!)
