Donating Plasma/bone Marrow

So, I've been looking around for quick ways to make some cash, and i keep coming across donating plasma/bone marrow/white blood cells.
I've heard that with plasma you can make anywhere fro 20-90 bucks depending on how much you give.
With bone marrow, once again depends on how much you give, but it can be from $125-500. This process is really long though and can take up to 7 hours.
There's also another treatment where you take medication for a few days prior which would raise your white blood cell count and you can make up to $750.

NOW, what i want to know... have any of you done this? I'm really interested and if i can make an extra couple hundred every now and then it would be great.

A friend of mine in another city does it from time to time..not the bone marrow but the plasma. If you don't get any info, I'll contact him and then post here what he tells me.

Is that safe?

I guess it is. My friend seems to have no problems doing it at least.

I wouldn't do bone marrow. Unless things have changed since my brother had that done to give my youngest brother a bone marrow transplant...that can be pretty painful.

Never heard of the white blood cell tho...

I was listening to a radio show about bone marrow transplants and I guess it has changed.
Now, I guess what they do is the have a needle/IV or whatever it is in one arm and a tube going to a machine and then back into the other arm. I think that's how they do it now. Basically it's jsut recycling the blood and taking out what it needs... From what I understand.

Don't do it in some back alley. I'm assuming it's like any other medical procedure. Don't do it anywhere shady.
If you're talking about is donating these things actually safe, like is it safe to donate plasma, the answer is yes. White blood cells would come back in about 20 days and plasma I've heard you can sometimes donate two times a week.

I keep meaning to look into it to make some extra cash to save for the wedding/honeymoon next year. Let me know if you pursue it. I'd like to know.

I definately will post here if I find anything out!

I'm a fairly regular red cross donor and have done different donations. Normally it's the typical "give a pint" variety. For that sort of donation you have to wait 56 days before you can donate again. I've considered getting a couple bucks for what I normally do as a donation, just havent' gotten around to it. (I try to schedule a Red Cross donation as close to New Year's Eve as I possibly can. It was something a friend and I did a couple years, now, for me, it's sort of a tradition).

But, since my blood type is always in demand, I sometimes get pulled for Apheresis donations. They take a while and involve a needle in one arm for the blood to go out and a needle in the other arm for the "left overs" to get put back in. This counts, in the Red Cross Blood Drive schema, as a double donation and I had to wait longer to donate again.

I am also on the National Marrow Donor list, and am in dread of being called - I've not heard that it's any less painful as they put a needle into your pelvic bone to extract the bone marrow. Even for that money, I don't know that I could do it.

I've heard that donating bone marrow is like, the most painful thing to do. No Joke.

You know, I've heard that too, BUT, on NPR, there was a whole hour long segment about it and how it's changed so much. He said it's not as invasive as it was before and it definitely doesn't hurt as much as it does before. I guess if I ever do it I'll let you guys know.

Do you think there's any way you can get phone numbers for someplace around chicago, IL?

I did plasma in college, when i factored in travel and time, it was right about minimum wage.

Bone Marrow... I wouldn't unless I had to. $500 still wouldn't convince me. The pain alone... no way.

I am on the bone marrow transplant registry for donations, although I have not been called yet. I signed up, and while I won't get paid, hopefully if someone is in dire need I will be able to help. It is also good because if a family member is ever in need of an immediate transplant they have your information to test for you compatibility already on file. I am sure even with advancements the procedure is painful but, sometimes another human's life is worth temporary pain.

So far I only do Red Cross. You might want to check a local paper, our weekly ad paper had classifieds for blood donation.

I've donated plasma at a local placed called CSL Plasma. What they give you varies by what you weigh, because the more you weigh the more they can take. I got $45 the first 5 times going and now get between $20 and $30. I was in a super tight bind with work so I didn't have a choice but to do it. You don't feel weak or anything after since they return your red blood cells and all that. However it can take a while to do. I've gone and have never been out any earlier than 2 hours.
