Hookah Survey

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm Molly, and I'm a respiratory therapist. I've been an occasional hookah smoker for the last 4 years (I own a beautiful blue Al Fakher) and I'm conducting a survey to get to know some of the social habits as well as the overall respiratory health of my fellow smokers. I promise my survey is not in ANY way trying to get you to quit, your health is your responsibility- I'll just take care of you when you get sick. So if you would kindly fill out my survey, it will help in my quest for answers. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have regarding my research or anything else you might want to know. Thanks!

That was less biased than I expected! Great questions.

Now to turn the tables :) As a respiratory therapist, do you examine many people who smoke only hookah versus people who smoke only cigarettes? If so, is the health of their respiratory systems comparable? Did you notice any negative changes to your own respiratory system during your experiences with hookah?

I knew a respiratory therapist and they only deal with people with serious respiratory problems. They are not involved with normal health check ups.

I would be surprised she has had a patient who was strictly a hookah smoker.

Oh, I know that people don't normally see respiratory therapists, but if the OP made a survey about the subject and went as far to say "I'll just take care of you when you get sick," it kind of wouldn't surprise me since she's supposedly a respiratory therapist suggesting we're going to get sick. But it looks like she's disappeared anyways :( Edited by Fus

I would edit the last question to include.

Shisha is cooked not burned like other tobacco products.

Agreed. I put that in other.

When I get sick, I won't step into a medical facility...they will just make you even more sick. I'll stick to my natural remedies (Chiropractic, acupuncture, nutrition, etc).

I do not live in an area where people smoke hookah regularly. There were hookah bars around here, but they closed due to disinterest. I'm conducting this survey in part to see the perceived health differences in hookah and cigarette smokers.

In response to my own personal smoking, I am not a frequent smoker. My profs. put the fear in me of smoking but you know what, I don't really care what they think anymore. I've smoked more in the past two semesters to de-stress after a difficult day than anything.

Regarding my "I'll just take care of you when you get sick" statement- it means just that. If you came to a medical facility in which I was employed, I wouldn't judge you or push you to quit. I would ask if you've tried to quit or if you're interested in cessation information but that would be because my job requires it. I'm a an oddity in the medical community where I do prefer more natural methods of medicine and even have gone so far as to say that I do not want intubated.

I do apologize for my tardiness in replies, I thought the system would message me when I got responses. It seems I was mistaken.

I really do appreciate the responses I am getting. Seeing that I am getting a lot of the same write-in response I fully intend to present it in my paper as a common notion.

Anything else I can do for you guys?

This makes me sad. I know plenty of smokers who haven't gotten sick and plenty of non-smokers ending up with COPD. If you think I'm a supposed respiratory therapist, that is your prerogative and I hold no ill-will against you. The medical community has done some seriously stupid things in the past for people to think that they would hope that people get sick.

Thanks for the response, Molly. Too bad you don't have more experience examining people who exclusively smoke hookah, I was really interested to hear if you had any data or anecdotes on that :(

I meant no offense toward you in saying you were supposedly a respiratory therapist, sorry if I offended you. I was just taking the position against Skoozle that it would NOT be surprising to me if somebody saw a respiratory therapist who only smoked hookah based on your survey and comment about taking care of us when we get sick (which I wasn't offended by, that's your job). Based on that, I assumed you may have had some experience with people suffering from respiratory problems that smoked hookah.

I didn't mean you were a "supposed" respiratory therapist, as in trying to take you down a notch because I'm dead-set in some belief that water filters the dangerous stuff out or something like that and hookah is 100% harmless, I just meant you're a person on the internet saying you're a respiratory therapist so it was just an expression of (very mild) skepticism.

Anyways, I hope that clears that up and please keep us updated with your survey, at least I'd be interested in seeing whatever it is you put together with all this data Edited by Fusion

Again thanks for all of the help in answering the survey. I need to find a bit more supporting articles on the Pro side of Hookah safety. I'm starting to feel like my paper is biased only because the information I have found thus far is from WHO and the American Lung Association regarding the medical aspect of things.

You should google Kamal Chaouachi. That should give you what you're looking for. :)
