Smoking My First Hookah

Recommended Posts

I finally had time to sit down and fire up the lovely Legend that I bought from Stuie a couple weeks ago.

I watched Cheeres' video on how to pack an egyptian. I used Havana Bahrain Apple shisha and coconara coals.

The bowl I have is really shallow. Maybe a pinch or two and it's full. Which is OK for now since I'm just starting out and I'm not going to be smoking much (can you "reuse" shisha? if you smoke a short session?). I used a bamboo skewer to poke the holes (should probably use a tapestry needle next time) through the foil.

The coals I lit on a gas stove. They took quite a while. At least, with it being dark out, I could turn off the kitchen light to check to see if they were glowing properly. As I don't have tongs, I used two forks like chopsticks to pick up the coals. I put them in a ceramic ramekin which has a layer of salt on the bottom (I put salt in the bottom of my incense burners, keeps it from getting hot enough to burn what I put it on).

Taste is nice. I don't know if I really taste apple, but I don't taste tobacco. Only harsh if I draw too deep. Kind'a glad I'm not having my first hookah in a bar/lounge, this way I can go at my own pace and not worry about big clouds (which would just make me cough).

well gratz on the first smoke its always the heaviest to do, might get a headache but it all gets better from there.

Those Egyptian bowls are amazing and kind of my favorite for small bowls most flavor for the tobacco also saves on the smoke enjoy man and long live the smoke

I picked the apple because I have only two washed shisha - apple and cola and I wanted to save the cola. Since I never smoked (really) before, I wanted the low nicotine content. I didn't get a headache and might have had a slight buzz. I had the windows open and didn't drink alcohol, just to be sure I wouldn't get sick.

I might try again on Wednesday - the thing is I get home late most nights and I don't want to start much after 9, especially if I have to get up early in the morning. As I get the hang of it - know better how the CN coals will work on the stove, perfect my packing, don't have to keep checking to make sure I have enough water in the base, I'll be able to start a little later (on nights where I don't have to get up early the next day).

BF was worried I'd have a rough time of it (he's a long time smoker), and is glad I didn't. I was worried too which is why I took it slow, didn't have beer or wine, and had plenty of air moving. I was pleased how nice the shisha tasted, which I guess is what I am going for now, not big clouds or super duration. The duration was about right, about an hour with two CN coals.

LOL Chreees. See I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing first. I even had a fire extinguisher next to me just in case Klondike and Klea (two of our 3 cats) decided to go run run round and knock it over. Klea was elsewhere and Klondike had to first check out the base with the bubbling - what is that? sniff sniff that's an odd noise. stare. later he jumped on the couch (the hookah was on the floor) to check out the coals - what are these? what's that smell? "Don't get too close or you'll singe your nose"

One question - the rest of my shisha is .5% nicotine. How much more of a punch does that have than the .05%? How does that compare with a cigarette? (I know, it's a different method of combustion) Should I continue on the .05% for a couple 50g boxes or slowly work my way to .5% (I have a .5% apple I could probably mix the two).

From what I thought, Havana is unwashed. So if you're worried about unwashed being too strong, you should be fine!

Congrats on popping the cherry!

Yeah Havana is .5 content to my knowledge, so washed shisha such as AF should be a breeze for you.

If it is getting hard, attempt to rotate the coals more often to spread the cooking of the shisha to a level amount on each side.

Otherwise happy to hear another has fallen to the dark side :)

Well, the box of Havana said .05% so that's what I'm going on. I have some Fantasia (appletini was the first box of shisha I bought in anticipation of my hookah) and Al Waha. in addition to Havana. The Fantasia and AW both said .5% which is why I skipped them (otherwise I would have done the pumpkin spice Fantasia to go with the crisp evening last night).

I don't smoke cigs either, but I've taken a drag from BF's once or twice (when he's asked me to hold it for him) so I have a slight clue in that department.

(geez I almost feel like I should be 10 hiding in the garage with friends stealing our first smoke LOL)

In my experience Havana is no lighter or stronger than Al-Waha. You don't have to worry about them!
