Epoch
Start one small piece at a time, on the sides of the bowl. Keep adding pieces slowly until you get a good smoke level. Usually, 2-3 natural coals is good for most bowls.
A13lackFish
Usually 3 coals to "start" the bowl, then change to two coals until they wear down to about half size. This usually keeps the cook at the perfect amount without suddenly burning the top layer. Once the 2 coals that are on there burn to half size put the 3rd back on and rotate them constantly (usually 8-10 puffs). Once those are getting close to done, light another 2 on the stove, and then replace the almost gone coals with those once they are fully lit. mushrat
ok, when i say chunk i mean a 1/3 of a stick. I use a chunk, broken into 2 or 3 smaller pieces set around the edge of the bowl and moved regularly.

mushrat
keep in mind soemthing i have said over and over, you are NOT going to get thick smoke the first pull or 3..give it a minute or more to come up to vaporizing temp.
Bawhee
its nice to leave the coal on the bowl for a few minutes before starting smoking so it warms up without the first crappy few pulls
