Epoch
Something I should say to everyone here on HF... Thanks a million, folks! Had it not been for all of you, my hookah world be made of chinese junk pipes and Hookah-Hookah tobacco. I would think that the local store's sparky, crumbly, smelly instant-light charcoal was the best stuff out there. Getting Starbuzz from the hookah lounge would still be the highlight of my smoking for the week! There would be a dreadful water line stuck in my hookah vase that I'd never be able to get out. Where would I be without all of you telling me the joys of natural coals? Phunnel bowls? Premium tobaccos? Amazing hand-made hookahs? I wonder, would I still be smoking with the same joy... Would it still be exciting today if you all hadn't shown me what I had been missing out on? I know my posts are usually much more concise than this one has been, but it's a curiosity to me. And I'm grateful for all the help you guys have always been. I doubt my hookah love would be half of what it is today without you guys being so cool and always knowing your stuff. You turned me from a casual consumer into a hookah champion. All just by doing what you love. Happy smoking.
MichaelLCP
Glad to hear it man! This forum showed me much of what I know today as well. It's amazing what a group of avid hookah smokers can do for each other.
vendetta_revived
Guilty of smoking a pumpkin hookah with afzal tobacco and unbranded quicklites (lit halfway before they went on the bowl) and thinking that it is the shizzle! I think I'd have left this whole hookah smoking because of all the headaches from the quicklites if I hadn't found this forum, and wouldn't ever have enjoyed a bowl of Kashmir guava on a hot summer day! Fusion
Nice post! I can relate, even from just lurking I stopped putting so many holes in my foil, increased my already OCD-like heat management skills, and learned about a lot of new brands and types of shisha. It's nice to have a common interest and be able to help people join in the lifestyle, but it's great that there are so many knowledgeable people around that can help make that lifestyle more in-depth and enjoyable no matter how experienced you are. I think that's the value of any community, and I'm glad to be a part of this one.

atalanta
I'm of the "I know nothing about ____ so I'll join a forum about ____ and learn as much as I can." If I hadn't, I would have been another Chinese hookah, HH smoking, QL (maybe) using noob. Some friends said "Get a MYA!!!!" so I was already looking that way, but I was still tempted by the cheaper side of the force. I almost bought one just so I could smoke hookah during hurricane Irene a few weeks ago (I'd already been here a a week or so) to tide me over until I could get a "real" hookah. But I didn't and I LOVE the one I got from Stuie. When people starting touting naturals over QLs, the "smart part of my brain" said "Duh! you don't use Matchlights in the grill, why would you use them for hookah?" So I bought CCNs at the local tobacco shop before I even picked out a hookah. I wonder how incense will work with CCNs rather than QLs (I have a roll of them for that purpose). Since I'm not a smoker (though I guess now I can't say that), I knew even less about tobacco. While I was checking out local tobacco shops that were supposed to have hookah stuff, I almost bought a box of HH Spiced Rum (sounded good). I ended up buying a box of Fantasia because another friend likes Fantasia. Then I read the reviews and was glad I passed on the HH. So, thank you. If I had done what I'd orginally planned, I probably would be using my hookah as a decoration.
vendetta_revived
AANNDDD...my brother called me the other day. I was at home and he and 2 of his friends were about to come from his office and he asked me if I can set up the hookah for them and pack AF guava (He has a slight idea of what's good because he smokes with me when his wife is not around haha), and I said okay, and did so. When they all came, he took the hookah in his room and requested me to light the coals because he wanted to catch up with them as they had met after several years, and he wouldn't have known when they are lit anyway, so I put 2 coals on my electric burner and one of his friends called me into his room. When I got there, he asked me how much the hookah cost me, and I told him (and then told him how much the crown micro phunnel costs - 1700+ in my currency). He was SHOCKED *at my ignorance* because the smart guy knows shops where all that could have been bought for less than half the price. I was pissed but I kindly told him that he is talking about pumpkin hookahs where as mine is a mya qt with crown micro phunnel on top, and he still behaved as I know nothing and laughed at my stupidity. He then followed me into the kitchen when I went to have a look at the coals and asked me what in the world am I doing? I mean, he told me about these "magical" coals that don't need all that burner crap and light in a minute by using just a match, and as much as I tried to explain the difference to him, he still believed I just don't know my shit and he really could have saved me a lot of money had I asked him (coming from someone who had smoked a hookah a total of ONE time before that day). He even told me about milk in the base and almost convinced my brother to get him some so he could educate us all about how to really smoke hookah. I had to tell my brother that there will be no hookah for them if he gets the milk to stop him. I was all like But then I came back to my room and as I was laughing in my head about that guys ways, it struck me again about how I got to know about all those things - This forum indeed! Thanks a lot guys!! Seriously!

[/quote] This haha On advice giving/dealing with comments...I usually try and keep it casual. When it comes to buying things like shisha, I simply tell them the truth, that there is no need to pay 10 dollars for a 50 gram box of Al Fakher or 25 bucks for a 250g box, that it can be bough online for sooooo much cheaper. If they say things about using milk or other things to the base, I simply say I would never do it , and the effects it will have on their vase/hookah/hose. They will either listen or not. I think its fair to say that the less the listen and do stupic things, the quicker they will stop smoking hookah because it will not be the experience they think it is. Most people buy no name Chinese hookahs to start..I just tell them that if this is something they really start to enjoy it, what kind of Hookah to invest in when they are ready. The people around me who do know about hookah tend to get impressed with the draw they get from my QT with the micro phunnel and get intrigued by the design of the bowl (Did I mention that I am probably the only guy with a crown phunnel in a country of over 1 billion people? ), and I feel good when they can appreciate the difference between pumpkin hookahs and a good one. Oh wait....that comes off as bragging. :-s
