magick777 Posted October 13, 2011 Share Posted October 13, 2011 What's the single biggest discovery, innovation or idea in shisha terms that you routinely use and recommend - above and beyond all the usual advice about decent coals, decent bowls, decent hoses, etc.? There's a reason I ask, which is that I am (very slowly) migrating from a wholly Egyptian setup, with which I've smoked for years, to an approach that's ever more replete with modern, Western innovations and conveniences. So far, this includes flavour-retaining bowls (from Saphire and Crown), pre-cut shisha foils (from Aladin) and washable hoses, as well as the joy of trying many different tobaccos. Yet maybe I'm still missing a lot; I have an easy, local source of Middle Eastern supplies and consumables so I'm using lemon wood lump coals and Syrian olive wood finger coals; I've never seen a Japanese-style coal, a bamboo coal or a coconut coal in my life; is it perhaps time I did? I've not yet tried:

more variety of coals
a decent windcover, as I can't cheaply get one to fit;
wider-than-Nammor hoses;
shisha juice aka mola-mix;
shiazo;
diffusers;
aluminium charcoal spacer rings;
travel cases / gas torches / mobilising the shisha
purpose-built charcoal holders, burners, etc.
What do you think? Some of this is junk, no doubt, and I've done enough already to enjoy a supreme quality of smoke most of the time, but I'm becoming more interested in convenience/simplicity, as well as in having the right tools for whatever tobacco it occurs to me to try next. The pre-cut foils, for instance, are worth every penny, as are the fancy bowls. So what wouldn't you be without? What am I missing? Is it worth spending nearly the price of a pipe on a 12" tall luxury KM windcover? Does a KM jumbo vase make any functional difference (stability, cooling, filtration) or is it purely aesthetic? Anyone have experience of turning cheap and plentiful Nakhla into something wetter with shisha juice? Thoughts welcomed... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
vendetta_revived Posted October 13, 2011 Share Posted October 13, 2011 Do you think the pre cut foil sheets are better than say, a roll of heavy duty foil? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
S3cretz Posted October 13, 2011 Share Posted October 13, 2011 phunnels, vortexes and crowns oh mai. On a lighter note diffusers now hookah and movies work better together than ever before! not so recent but still important manufacturers noticing theres a difference between stainless and cast steel.
Yes, for sheer damn convenience. No cutting, shaping, or going to fetch it; just slip one out the pack and smooth onto the bowl. The foil itself is heavier than anything I can buy in the supermarket, heavy-duty included, a single sheet does wonders and seals very nicely to whatever bowl I use it with, in about four seconds flat. No question of whether to double this stuff, and it's hefty enough that I have no qualms about putting holes in it four at a time with a dinner fork. Definitely a hundred times more useful than I expected it to be. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Thanks! @Topic: You count is as a usual advice which is okay, but the phunnel design bowl according to me is the most innovative invention to date! Chreees Posted October 13, 2011 Share Posted October 13, 2011 For me it would have to be between Tangiers, Tangiers phunnel bowls, coconut coals, or well-made Egyptian and Syrian hookahs. I can't decide because they all work so well together for me! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
