Zildjian
Come at me bros..... Anyways, I bought a Crown Micro from Eddie the other day because he had an extra one. I was really excited because of all the hype it got around here, but I gotta say, I'm pretty unimpressed overall. The good: saves a lot of tobacco, is pretty The bad: can only go a little bit over the bowl grommet making me nervous (tried KM and Mya grommets), somewhat whispy smoke, some flavor loss (absolutely attributed to the air filled, diluted, whispy smoke). I would love to see from those who love this bowl your foil patterns because no matter if I do big holes, small holes, I got the same whispy smoke. I wuoldnt mind also seeing your packing methods and how high you pile it (I noticed that because of the design, its almost impossible to have the foil touching the tobacco, and probably adding to the mediocre smoke). Prove me wrong, I'd love to love this bowl, but for now it's back to the Tang small till I run into a flavor that I'm almost out of.
Stuie
pack mostly tight. A few holes around the bowl and one over the center. Coconut Coal cut in half. Half on each side. Windcover first 5 minutes then off and just go!
Chreees
Yeah, I suspect you just haven't mastered packing/poking holes/doing coals correctly on it yet.

Zildjian
Now I am interested to see Dave's because I poked that many holes in the bowl (though didnt pack it quite so tight, which I will try tonight) and it was whispy.

Coyote
Yeah the heat doesn't hold as well in glass so you will find that the smoke session in inconsistent. The coals get smaller and then so the bowl gets cooler, then you load more coals on and it heats up again... etc etc etc. High-fire clays are the best material for maintaining a constant temperature. Zildjian
interesting. i think the biggest difference between you all and Eddie is the density of the pack. Im gonna try your packing with 2 rows of deep holes and 2 full cocos. ill let ya know how it goes!!
IainUM
wtf dave? also, evan, if you end up not getting it to smoke well, sell it to me! hahaha
Zildjian
So after some trial and error I have (not miraculously) pinpointed the issue on heat management. The issue is that the bow itself, from top to bottom, does not get hot enough (as opposed to clay bowls that often get too hot). I am going to try using 3 coco halves under a windcover for the whole session tonight and check back. Last night was tight pack, big holes, 2 full cocos: still not enough heat. I also found that since the bowl does not conduct as much heat that coals need to be flipped more often so that the hotter part is on the foil. Chreees
Weird... I found myself needing to use much less coal than that (I usually used two halves or four fourths) when I owned my Micro Phunnel...
