Guides For Packing Shallow Bowls?

Recommended Posts

I have a few different size Egyptian bowls, some are huge and some are small. I always pack them the exact same way...so it really should not matter.

Uh, I think I know what he's talking about. It really looks nothing like a true Egyptian bowl. More like the Tangiers bowl (not the phunnel, the other one). I love mine and my Tangiers bowls but they're primarily used for heat-loving tobaccos. I pack them very loosely across in a very thin layer of tobacco. With Fantasia for example I can get by with a surprisingly small amount of tobacco. I've also used them with old school tobaccos packed very tight. Nahkla, etc, seem to work especially well. The main thing about them I've noticed is that because all the heat seems to be contained within the inside of the bowl, you need to make sure you have room between the tobacco and the foil, because the bowl design itself tends to burn hotter within the bowl.

Well, I got the bowl from Hookah John when he was carrying them. They were called "Italian Clay Bowls". I bought the large, flat. shallow style one, and a regular egyptian style one. I tried packing nakhla in it tightly, but the coals were touching it too much, and I wasn't getting enough airflow. Burnt city.

I think of my egyptian as being shallow. I followed Chreeses' packing instructions and have gotten 2 hours fairly regualrly from it. I used Havana and Fantasia with CCN coals. I fluffed the shisha and then sprinkled it into the bowl, just a little taller than the top. Then I put on the foil and pushed it down with the palm of my hand. Smoothed the foil, poked holes and put 2 whole CCNs at 3 and 9. When they ran down, I put two more at 12 and 6 adjusting them as they burned down. Sure, I'm still learning because when I'm done it's all burnt to the foil. But clouds and flavor have been pretty good.

I have a few of those exact same bowls, purchased from the same vendor John got them from, though mine are traditional Lebanese male style. I've basically given up on them except for salloum and the like, seen here:

They're OK for Nakhla I guess, pack very loose over the holes and tight around the rim. But yeah, don't use anything sensitive to heat....

This method worked best. I'm getting nice big clouds and a good amount of flavor, though mizo watermelon doesn't have much flavor. I shoulda gotten DA or something with more kick.

*puffpuffs* :)

If mizo watermelon doesnt have TOO much flavor, you are doing something wrong.

Thbbbt. :P

I mean it doesn't have a very strong watermelon flavor. Even in the phunnel it tastes kinda bland. Tangiers Green Apple Candy has more flavor than it.

Hass, I like the way you think!

I personally LOVE the Italian bowl for smoking without foil. I have it specially reserved for black tobacco.
