Alright thanks guys. I might eventually get one if I have a few extra bucks, just see what people are talking about. I guess that's it for questions, for now.

Im wondering if a tea infuser would work, if I could manage to get it to fit nicely around my KM. hmmm...

Never tried... But everything is worth trying, no?

I'm a new smoker too. Some of the things I've come across:

When looking to buy a new "anything" check the review section here. Odds are Stuie has tried it and reviewed it.

I got a $10 glass mod phunnel from H-S and really liked it. It was nice for Fantasia which was gunky. Unfortunately it had a bad run-in with the sink and when I next order from them I'll probably get another one (it got a good review from the Forum Review Guru). I've noticed small tang phunnels are sold out a lot of places right now, which is why I'll go with the glass mod or maybe a crown.

If you have kitchen cupboards that open over your sink, they're great for hanging hoses to air out or dry (if they're washable). If not, just put down a towel to catch any drippings.

I set off the smoke alarm more often when cooking. Haven't had it go off yet for smoking (and BF is a cig smoker and it's NEVER gone off for him).

I've come up with a couple questions for you guys which I think would be good to know for when my KM does arrive.

1. How much (how many grams) do you guys usually smoke in a day, do you smoke on a daily basis?
if i had to estimate in grams...probably about 20 - 40. yes.
2. Is it ok to not fill the bowl to the top (I know you fill it under the rim, but what about lower then that, if you know you're not going to smoke that much)?
sure. you can do whatever you would like, however i wouldn't recommend it. i recommend having bowls of varying sizes for different scenarios and purposes. it's a bit like anything else, really. you wouldn't put a small amount of leftovers in a massive tupperware, you wouldn't tap a keg for 2 glasses of beer, i could go on ad nauseam here. the salient point, though, is that you should have the appropriate tools if you want good results.
3. How many coals do you guys generally put on an egyptian bowl?
depends. although "egyptian" presumes a general type and (at least theoretically) country of origin, i have 4 egyptian bowls - and i've seen many more - all with widely varying capacities. one that holds about 15 grams of tobacco, probably two coals. one that holds about 30 grams, probably three coals. again though, that depends on if you cut your coals and how you position them (e.g., coco naras, laying them or standing them up) it's all relative to surface area exposure. and of course, it's all relative to type of coals. if you're using instants versus natural lump vs cocos you would have different variations and combinations for each. the question is a bit vague though, it's a bit like asking, "how many air vents and returns would be in an american home?" the variables are somewhat endless and well beyond the scope of the question. the better question would be in regard to a particular bowl, this would give you a better idea of the capacity to surface area ratio, which is extremely important when talking about coal and heating.
4. Lastly when/why would you need to purge your hookah? How often do you purge your hookah?
whenever i feel like it. right now. if the smoke is getting harsh: purge. if you like the sound of the air escaping and the bb rattling against the cap: purge. if you want to annoy the person you're smoking with by purging after every other draw: purge. the only "real" reason is to clear stale or harsh smoke. i purge rather frequently it seems, compared to other members here.
5. Because I don't want to find out on my own, what's the situation with smoke alarms and hookah?
depends on the type of smoke detector. in all of my experiences, you won't have a problem.
6. You don't have to keep shisha refrigerated right?
no. do not do this. this is silly.
7. (might be considered a stupid question, like I said, i am a newb) When do you know you're done smoking a bowl? I'm guessing no more flavor or smoke?
it may keep smoking. usually the flavor will get weak or become unpleasant and the smoke quantity will diminish somewhat. i believe that, no matter the volume contained in the head/bowl, sessions will last about 2 hours (excluding ridiculously small heads). it doesn't matter, for me at least, if i use my small egyptian that has about a 15 - 20g capacity or my phunnel that has about a 45 - 50 gram capacity i will always get about 2 rounds of coco naras and slightly more (but it's annoying to put a third round of coals on to smoke for 10 minutes and waste the coal while repacking).

I've heard that it smokes better when you fill the bowl right below the rim, but i'm not sure how much of a downside there is to not packing it to the top, if say you knew you didn't have time to smoke an entire bowl.
see above. you can always "necro" a bowl. that is, for us jargon slingers, to smoke as much as you would like, put the hookah away, and come back later with fresh coals in a reasonable amount of time - say, no more than a day. the main element here is conduction vs convection. conduction is a much more efficient way of heating something than convection, for this reason, maximizing contact of coal to tobacco (with the foil acting somewhat as a diffuser, primarily though as a protector and making things convenient by not having coals stick to tobacco) is the best way of heating the bowl. underpacking and therefore reducing or eliminating this contact can result in a poor session and needing more coal than necessary to perform the task at hand.
I think that's it as far as questions go so far. Thanks ahead-of-time for any answers.

Oh and contrary to popular belief (Chreees). I am in fact a human of the female type. :P

You'll lose flavor and it'll just taste like smoke (won't necessarily taste harsh, but it may). I actually haven't completely smoked an entire bowl in a long time, because I smoke Tangiers in a Tangiers Mini Phunnel and the longest I went was 7 hours and it STILL had a tad bit left unburnt in the bottom when I was done smoking. For other brands though (all brands are different), out of a standard Egyptian bowl, I'd say 1-3 hours is the life expectancy of a bowl before it's completely gone.

Sadly I won't be able to smoke to often because of money. Yea, I ordered Razans. When im at the local Hookah lounge, I always start the coals barley hanging off the edges, so I guess I won't have to change that much. Yea im hoping the smoke alarm won't be a problem, I live in a small apartment as well. Good to know about the tupperware, I can definitely do that.

Thanks for the info.

No problem. Hopefully this additional info will be helpful as well:

One of the reasons I smoke Tangiers is that it can be saved for smoking later. There are several methods for this:

1. Just take the coals off and come back to it later (even a day or two later), and just throw new coals on the bowl.

2. Also take the coals off when you're done, but when you come back to it, take off the foil and replace just the very top "burnt" layer of tobacco with fresh stuff. You can either re-use the same foil if you can salvage it (most likely there will be too much tobacco stuck to it), or just use a new piece.

3. Remove the "burnt" layer and throw the rest back in the tub. It's always been okay in my experience, but Eric, the creator of Tangiers, says it's not ideal as the tub of tobacco loses flavor and whatnot this way.

I'm the biggest fan of number 2, as number 1's method you notice a significant lack in flavor. With number 2's method, it's like smoking a freshly packed bowl, but you didn't have to use near as much tobacco to do so. I used to do number two all the time, but because I am stocked with kilos of Tangiers, I'm not as worried about it. When my stock dwindles I'm sure I'll make use of my bowls and use the number two method again. I stopped doing number 3 because Eric got me all paranoid about it, haha.

Note that I myself have not been able to use these methods with other brands of tobacco with much success. It seems Tangiers is just awesome like that. Now I know you won't be smoking Tangiers now, but hopefully someday you will, and this info will come in handy. :)

I do number 2 and 3 but I'll end up leaving the non burnt tobacco in the bowl for the next day, seeing as I know it will be good for atleast 1 more. I sometimes don't really put new stuff in seeing as the old stuff will be dead.. then the new will be good for another and I have to scratch around the burnt pieces. So I end up removing burnt stuff and depending on how much I'll replace it but typically unwilling.

I'm stilling learning too though.
