Just Got My Tangiers In...

Recommended Posts

Just got my Tangiers in with three 250s.

I am planning to smoke my Lemon Blossom and wanted to make sure that I did everything right to maximize the fun.

I have a few different bowls, but they are all mod or Egyptian.

Anyhow I see the parts about letting it air out, but the packing the bowl part concerns me. Is it really in the bowl the same way as the package, because that seems pretty tight. Do I still stab a ton of deep holes for ventilation?

I normally go 2 coconut coals to heat my bowl, does that sound about right?

Also this is a two-person smoking session so recommended amount?

Lastly I got an air tight container for the Tangiers since the bag locks unsealable, that should work for storage right?

you can smoke tangiers in those bowls i dont recomend it, pack it a little tight but not so much since ur holes are at the bottom try to poke from the bottom of ur bowl up to get the air flow for the tobacco.

and t he containers should be fine just let it air out a bit before trying to smoke it

They say when using a standard egyptian/mod bowl:

1 - Pack the tobacco hard and tight against the "wall" or sides of the bowl
2 - Sprinkle tobacco clumps loosely over the middle section of the bow where the holes are
3 - Poke plenty of holes
4 - Add your coals piece by piece, until you gradually hit the right heat level

With an egyptian bowl go ahead and pack really tight on the sides and less dense through the middle. Use heavy duty foil, with lots of big holes poked all the way down to the bottom. For coals, it depends on which type of coals you are using. CH coals have less heat than CCN... less heat is preferred with Tangiers. Try starting with two and allow the heat to build for 20 minutes before adding more heat. You may choose to use a windcover and then remove it just before the taste changes (usually before 20minutes). Without a windcover it may take about 15-20 minutes for your clouds to grow in volume. PM me if you have more questions.

Going for it tonight, but def. ordering a tangiers phunnel on Wed. I smoke with my gf a lot(2 of us) and with another couple a decent bit (4 of us). Occasionally we have parties with 5+ but we normally have another hookah then. Bowl size recommended for 2-4 people?
Any specific bowl if I am going to go Tangiers?

I recommend the Tangiers Small Phunnel, but unfortunately they are out of stock pretty much at all the vendors. Expect more in a month or so I'd guess. But this bowl will definitely suit 2-4 people per hookah just fine. Another bowl you can look at in the meantime is a glass Crown Signature phunnel made by CrownHookahs.com. Very comparable to the Tangiers Small Phunnel. I still recommend the Tangiers bowls the most because they are the most accurate depth/width ratio for smoking Tangiers and also they are made out of a quality clay, which is best for heat retentiveness.

Using Lemon Blossom. Smelled really floral after I let it air out for about 1 hour. Not a bunch of smoke. The harshness is... different really feeling it in the back of my throat. Buzz is still strong though the smoke is so thin.

Well, if it is Noir (which sounds like it is), then you should be getting huge clouds, huge flavor with a slight tobacco undertone, but it *may* tickle the back of your throat a bit. This is what it's supposed to be like, and what you should work towards achieving.

seeing as i have a lot of experience with tang in an egyptian considering i was without a phunnel for about 5 months, i can tell ya what works. i packed mine pretty densely throughout the whole thing, not just the sides, but the inside, too. using toothpicks i poked holes where the holes in the bottom were so there would be clear airways and then put foil on top. it should be packed pretty well and last a while. i think 2 coals on their sides (assuming they are flats vs cubes) should be enough. if it is a bigger egytian, i think 2 coals on their biggest sides will be just a little too much heat for it, so it would be harsh,if it is a smaller egyptian i would experiment with one coal or perhaps cut those coals in half. the name of the game is heat management

Well I opened it open and it def. did not look burned, the coconut rectangles I use burn pretty low. I'll probably just get the other version phunnel until a tangiers pops up.

Thanks all.

I smoked Tangiers Mint for the first time last weekend. Keep in mind, I was only my 4th or 5th bowl of shisha I have ever loaded.

I followed some guides that said to pack it a little tight so I did just that. I loaded it in a vortex bowl so I made sure the holes werent covered.

My smoke wasnt very big, but it only was harsh when the spot got stale or got to hot. Other than that it gave me a huge buzz.

Also, I started with 2 coals and wasnt getting much smoke, when I added a third I got a lot more smoke, with a slight bit of harshness on some pulls.

I would just keep experimenting with it, and play with the heat a little bit.

One thing to note, make sure that your containers are a wide shallow container (better for acclimating), and that they are recycle number 5 (polypropylene). Other types of plastic are porous and will leech the flavor out of your shisha.

This.... I smoke Tangiers as much out of my Egyptians as I do my phunnels or Super Chief. I pack the hell out of it, and then I take a long toothpick or kabob stick and poke through the holes from the bottom to get some air flow because it's so tight there would be none unless I did this. Then I either use Golden Canary coals which are lower heat, or break two coco coals into quarters and then add them one little nugget at a time. Generally I've found 3 pieces work really well set equally around the bowl top. The thing about Tangiers is if you think you have enough heat from the look of it, you probably have too much.

Tah, sounds like you under packed it. Try to pack it in a little tighter next time and see if you get less harshness.

A Tangiers Phunnel will improve your results.

Okay, thanks for the suggestion.

I am trying another bowl right now (I have it, I might as well smoke it)

Since I am a "noobie" I might have mistaken the harshness for the cooling of the mint.

This bowl, I dont taste a lot of mint, but have the cooling in my throat. I feel I could have easily made that mistake the first time around, since I havent smoked a lot of "throat cooling" flavors since I start smoking out of a hookah.
