betsy
So this may seem like a really really dumb question... but I've never seen anyone use more than one instant light coal at a time. You all seem to be talking about using multiple coals and I have gotten the impression that this means two coals at the same time, if this is the case, how do they both fit at the same time? Do you break them?
Alqoshnia
some brands need that extra mmppff because they are so moist such as Al Fakher, Havana, and Al Amir. I usually start with 1 whole coal the first 5-10 minutes then add another whole either piggy back or on opposite end of the first one. I usually dont so this with Fumari or Nakhla tho
Calcartman
When I used instant lights i thought the same thing; but I use Japanese style 'easy lights' now and two will defnitly fit. With quick lights yeah, breaking them into pieces works great. My friend basically took his coals and broke them in half, and used 3 halves per bowl spaced evenly around the sides.
ioannisds
I use one single 40mm Three Kings coal for almost all the tobacco I smoke, and it works great. With the smaller discs, usually 1 and 1/2 works well.
zombiedepot
I normally try to use only one charcoal, but I have to put another one on to get the smoke really going. Sometimes break them in half, but then they burn up quicker.
cymptom
I usually end up using 3 halves of 3 Kings, unless I'm smoking Tangiers in which case I use 3 Japanese Canary Goldens. But I think it depends even more on the size of the bowl than it does on the brand your smoking. The more you can space the coals out, the less likely you'll burn the tobacco. edit: And I didn't mean to say that you can't get a good smoke out of one coal... with my smaller bowls I tend to just plop one quicklight right in the center and it's frequently the perfect amount of heat. xpimpitox
i use 2 canary coals spread across from each other than work its way towards the center. depending on th brand (if its more wet like someone already said) ill add a 3rd coal and just place it smack in the middle and smoke till im satisfied or its burnt. Oggie505
the only time I use more than one coal is with tangiers, but then i break them up into poeces, otherwise with all other brands I just use one 3King and get good smoke and flavour, I have learned that the coal process is how u manage it. I know people that use 2 to ge tthe same smoke as I can get with one

betsy
apparently the amount of coals also has to do with the kind of bowl, correct?i couldn't get any smoke from my havana with one coal in a clay bowl but when i moved it to a metal bowl everything worked fine.
