Extra Mint
So i just went up to Manchester and was SHOCKED to see so many shisha bars openly on the high streets with big shisha pictures on their windows... I started to think there must be some kind of loophole(s) in the smoking ban to allow that to take place... Just up in Bradford some guy spent over £300k (around $500k) setting up his shisha bar, now down in London where i live these places would get closed down right away, there have been so many ILLEGAL places that have got caught and closed down... HOW are these guys up in Manchester getting away with this. There must be some kind of loophole that allows them it.

Bawhee
I had a dream about owning a lounge myself and my solution in the dream was to make it a private club with a membership thingalingy, it was kidna complex since it was my dream, but I wonder if thats even a possible solution... btw that was yesterday that I had the dream
DrSmokes
I know in Chicago (USA), people get around it bc the law states that the bar air must be cleaner than the outside air. With all of the pollution in Chicago, any bar can have smoking and it apparently is cleaner than the outside air. That's what I heard from my uncle who's good friends with many club owners. Coyote
Herbal shisha? Like in NYC
Fusion
NYC has strict rules that require lounges to use herbal shisha? I went to a few places during a visit in Manhattan and found some that served Al Fakher or Nakhla, along with some extremely delicious teas. Extra Mint
Nope, they were not herbal... They were using proper Al-Fakher and advertised it... It was quite surprising on how many of them are there and advertising so openly despite the ban.
Chreees
What Mush said, probably just lack of enforcement.
Coyote
I found this article which *I think* is from 2008: http://www.tobaccofreeu.org/pdf/HookahWhitePaper.pdf It states: New York City has exempted Middle Eastern hookah bars from its ban against indoor smoking because they are defined as “tobacco bars” (Washington Times, 2004, Dana Young, 2003).
mushrat
you are correct Katie, after the law went into effect the middle eastern hookah bar owners got together and lobbied saying it was part of their culture. They got exemptions for NYC that way. So it's tobacco in NYC.
vendetta_revived
I've got a few friends in Manchester who frequent hookah lounges weekly and yes, when I asked them, they told me the lounges use a brand called something like "I'll fuck her" , so it's true! I talk to them a few times a week, so I'll tell one of them (who is pretty friendly with the staff of most lounges they go to) to ask someone on the inside. Chreees
It's sad and unfortunate that these places in countries such as Canada and UK have to operate as they do. It would only make sense to me that people should have the choice for themselves whether or not they wish to enter such an establishment. No, the people shouldn't have that choice in the first place. Yeah, makes a lot of sense. I feel the same way about the ban on indoor smoking here in states where hookah bars/lounges are still allowed to operate when it concerns other types of businesses. When we're just talking about say, restaurants, in my opinion, it should be up the the owner of the establishment if they want to allow smoking or not. Then the customers have the choice if they want to enter the establishments that allow smoking. No one is forcing you to enter a building that allows smoking. Don't like it? Go across the street to the restaurant that is non-smoking. Same goes for bars. I can't count how many times I've heard people come from next door and bitch about how they can't smoke in the bar. If only the world worked in a logical way...
â€On
I don't think there is a workaround like that in Canada just yet. It's possible, but I have never seen it anywhere. I wish....
