Okay so if remembered, a while ago I bought some tangiers. I have done the whole 4/20 acclimate thing before and I just got frustrated, and packed them up and put them away, as the "soy sauce-y" smell never went away. I tried again yesterday, and today one of my batches (cane mint) has the SLIGHTEST soy sauce-y smell. So I am wondering do I do the 4/20 thing again, or do you think it is safe to smoke? The other one (that one breakfast cereal) still has the soy sauce-y smell bad so I will continue to acclimate that one.

You may have to run 4/20 acclimation more than once to fully acclimate your Also it would help to know what flavor your bought. Tangiers. Here are the instructions for 4/20 acclimation:


4/20 acclimation
Open your Tangiers and empty it into a wide airtight container and stir it up well, making sure to combined all the juice with the tobacco*. Allow your container to be open, stirring everyone hour or so, for approximately 4 hours. Stir again and seal for 20hrs. Do not open your container, do not peak at all. After the 20 hours, open your container, stir thoroughly and give it the smell test. If you Tangiers smells off (bbq, ketchup, soy, etc) then repeat the steps for 4/20 acclimation**.

*Since humidity fluctuates throughout the day, start your acclimation process at the same time that you wish to smoke. If you like to smoke after dinner, then start the acclimation process after dinner. This will insure that you are catching a humidity window that is similar to your ideal smoke time. Unless of course there is a drastic weather change...

**Some flavors require more or less acclimation. Some flavors will smoke fine even if they smell slightly off. If you are unsure you can ask the forum or send me a PM.

agree with jess on this one but yah acclimatino is key to some of it like what katie said but try to smoke it and it may just surprise u and come out

Word. Some flavors like Blue Gumball kinda smell like they are unacclimated but smoke great.

Sorry I couldn't be more detailed in my post before. I was in a rush. Here's the part of my guide that I wanted you to read most specifically:

"2. How does it smell? If it smells like the flavor it should be, then you're most likely good to go. Does it smell like soy sauce or BBQ sauce? It needs to be acclimated then. For acclimation, use the 4/20 method, as this decreases the time the tobacco is open to the air, which can lead to flavor loss. Stir the tobacco in the container, then let it sit for four hours open to the air. Stir every hour or so. Then seal it up for 20 hours. Repeat until it smells right. If it just never smells right after trying this many times, then try the freezer method, which "resets" it if it is in humidity shock. Put the tobacco sealed into the freezer overnight. Then try the 4/20 method again. STILL no bueno? Seal it up and wait a month or two until your weather changes. For me in Tennessee, Noir doesn't like to work during spring and fall, when we see drastic weather changes day to day. But once the weather stabilizes, for the summer or winter, I'm good to go."

Are you sure it's soy sauce smell and not the natural tobacco smell instead? Noir often has tobacco undertones in it, why I ask. It sounds like you know what you're doing, so it may just be your weather/humidity is not being nice to you. Or as Jess and Pavo mentioned, they may be good to go and you just don't know it. However, Cane Mint should smell VERY strong of mint. ILTOBC, I'm not sure how it should be in Noir, as I've only had it once in Lucid. I agree and think you should try smoking a bowl and see how it is. As Katie mentioned, Blue Gumball is often a flavor that will always smell funky but smoke great (except my latest batch, which smells AWESOME). I've never experienced nor heard of Cane Mint and ILTOBC being characterized the same as Blue Gumball in terms of being one of those types of flavors, though. What's your current progress on this?

It's okay that your post was short I had read that link before you posted it. I have it in a wide tupperware container where when I spread it, I see the bottom of the Tupperware. I know it needs to do it more than once. It still has that smell. I mean it smells like peppermint strongly, but with an undertone of soy sauce. I tried it tonight, it was not strong in the mint flavor at all! Fantasia ace of spades has a stronger flavor. The clouds are wispy, they are big but wispy. I tried adding heat, removing heat. I don't know what I'm doing wrong lol. I packed it tight, and flush to the inner spire.... Any ideas. I mean the flavor you guys can't do anything for, but maybe my clouds you can.

Whispy clouds has more to do with the pack and heat management than anything else. First off, are you using a Tangiers Phunnel, a hookah john, or a chinese phunnel? The Tangiers (and hookah john from my understanding) Phunnel will make the world of difference. Secondly. how tight is it? try using the "palm test" which should be mentioned in the thread Chreees linked for you. Thirdly, heat.. what kind of coals are you using? Tangiers is very heat sensitive and too much heat makes it burn easily (notice this in flavor first, then it'll get harsh a puff or two later) Too little heat, you'll notice a slight tickle (almost as if it is hot) in the back of your throat. Usually in a small tangiers phunnel, three low heat coals (golden canaries ets) work perfectly, otherwise, try halfing higher heat coals (Coconara's etc) and using 3 or 4 halfs.


just saw that you threw the stuff out? What kind of packaging did it come in? tangiers comes in sealed bags.. about 10" long and 2/3 inches wide. unmistakable.

Can you happen to retrieve it from the trash and take a pic of the tobacco and the packaging? Nowadays Tangiers will only come in 250g (Eric used to sell 100g packages to some of the online retailers, but hasn't in a while). Any time that you see a storefront selling Tangiers, be cautious. I've heard stories of these places repackaging Tangiers 250gs so they can make more profit. Or they take the juices out of it. Or add stuff to it. Silly shit like that. Which is not only bad, but is illegal. Not a whole lot of stores sell Tangiers in person, so always be wary. Buying online from the trusted vendors is always best (HookahCompany, Hookah-Shisha, UltimateHookah, etc.). What you bought may have been real or it may have been fake. No way for us to confirm it unless we see what it was.

There was no packaging. The guy at the hookah lounge sold it by taking it from his tub, and weighing it. I am sure after smoking it, that he added things to it. When we threw it out, it wreaked. However, before applying heat it smelled strongly of peppermint. I packed it tightly, did the palm test. I am using a hj phunnel. And used three erotica coals so one whole finger. That is what I use on a really small Egyptian. I took one off and tried, but then the amount of smoke went away. So I'm pretty sure that three is fine. Like I said, lesson learned: won't buy from anyone but a vendor online. A trusted vendor online.

Anyway, There are various sizes of Tangiers available to consumers, lounges, and retailers. Retailers and Lounges are popping up frequently all over the country and selling Tangiers to the public. If you have questions or concerns about one of these places you can always contact myself or Eric.

Really? Well then. I thought I saw him say a while back he was just doing 250g and 500g packaging now (500g at the lounge). Last place I saw that sold 100gs were TexasHookah and HookahCousins (old stock from MNHookah). I stand corrected. :)

EDIT: I found it. A thread on .us (List of Tangiers Flavors, By Number) is what led me to believe 100gs were not being made anymore.

Shelly, do be aware that some shops will break open legit Tangiers and repackage it into smaller baggies or tubs. This is what I was mainly talking about in the above post. Avoid at all costs. A dude who used to be on here said his shop in Chicago did it all the time (Cleopatra's, if I recall correctly). He didn't really like Tangiers based off of what he bought from them. I sent him some, and it totally changed his mind. ;)

I always buy Tangiers from Hookahjohn. His inventory turnover is pretty high and is in close proximity to Tangiers, which normally means I am always buying the freshest Tangiers outside of stopping by the lounge myself.

If you got that from Moe at Al Omda Hookah in Tempe then its legit.

So back to square one. If you think you acclimated it correctly its on to packing method and heat management.

to anyone having trouble with tangiers:

i tried and tried forever to get it right. I spent probably like 30 dollars on mistakes....
BUT I FINALLY GOT IT!
and I can tell you that it is worth it, so don't give up!

i just needed to let it sit out for a long time, i did over kill with 24 hours and then filled the bowl more than it seemed a should, followed eric's instructions, and now i am tasting the peachiest iced tea!
