Another News Story, This One Will Do Real Damage

Recommended Posts

also on the my local news they aired this story
http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=news/technology&id=8484588

This is pretty serious stuff, not just cause he is an idiot and is 14. But this is going to bring the law hammer down on retailers. My guess is their going to have to do something like ordering ammo for a gun online. The company you are going to order from must have a copy of your valid license or ID card on file. That means more they will have to charge more to make up for those costs. So far, nothing has happened with this..yet. What do you guys think will happen? What should happen?

The USPS already forbids mailing cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. I'm surprised we can still get hookah tobacco through the mail.

When I order snus it has to be shipped UPS and I have to sign for it.

Amazon doesn't sell tobacco except in it's raw leaf or seeds form. I call bullshit on Pops who's probably trying to sue a national company for some quick money.

What I wanna know is how this can harm the hookah community... I mean sure it was what he supposedly ordered but the only thing this should harm is the companies not doing their jobs. This is, in my mind at least, not an issue with smoking hookah but poor website management.

It may have been TH since they sell on Amazon. I thought "nice hose" too, lol.

I don't think it will affect hookah any more than if he had ordered a briar pipe would affect pipe smokers.

This story should actually be focused on the bad parenting.
[/quote]

EXACTLY. But no, it's the government's fault and THEY should be the babysitters... No fault on the parents whatsoever. It's the reason why cigarettes and smokeless tobacco can't be mailed anymore, the gov said. When really they just wanted more taxes to be paid in each state. It's ridiculous. You can expect to see this affecting the hookah industry eventually. That's why I don't plan on smoking hookah for the rest of my life. Soon enough it'll kill all the small businesses within it (as it has done with cigarettes), and products will be so expensive that it just won't be worth it anymore. I hate to be a debbie-downer, but that's the way I see it. The gov can't outright ban it, but they can sure as hell tax it or put restrictions on it so that only the big corporations prosper and we as consumers suffer, and nothing is left for the small businesses. Way to go, America.

chris is right, since the parents did some shitty job the gov, is going to have to step in and say no more for you.Either crazy restirctions when and how u order or only certain states will even allow shipping of it. These are all just guesses of course. Maybe nothing will happen. I guess the words "real Damge" were a bit much, but it was late and i couldn't think. I'm sure esome people got the impression of watching the news cast that night that, Hookah vendors will sell to anyone to make a penny. Their just money hungry hippos. Lol its funny though everybody says first thing: at least he got the good hose, then says Damn thats one shitty bowl.

Who let's a 14 year old buy crap on the internet with out thier concent?

I guarantee you... give me 15 minutes on his comp and I can prove buying hookah stuff is the least of his offenses.

They have filters and good ones NetNanny, you can block shopping sites as well as adult sites.

Sounds like a crappy father to me.

Word, Stuie. It's all the parents' fault for not being responsible. Amazon and whatever company the products came from in Texas (H-S, HC, or TexasH?) are in no way at fault for this. The father is upset that the companies did not verify the age of the buyer... HOW CAN THEY? Seriously. How can any online retailer verify the age of its buyers? Everytime I go to something that makes me enter my birthdate, I laugh. Kids are smart. They know simple addition enough to add a few years back to the year they were born to make themselves seem of age. I did it as a kid, and I'm sure kids will always do it. It's just the way it is. Only way to stop them is using a program to restrict it, like NetNanny, like you said. Because the father did not do this, he's the one looking like an idiot for not being more responsible for his kid. What a schmuck.

If the kid stole his dad's credit card and made the order it would still result in the same thing, except the kid could be charged with Credit Card Fraud.

Age verification is typically done through Credit Card.

MF doesn't age verify either.

After watching the video again, I don't believe any laws were broken as regard to tobacco. What the kid ordered and received was Beamer, 100% tobacco and nicotine free.

Since I don't live in Kalifornia, I don't know if selling the hookah itself to a minor was illegal. A clever kid could just make one.

I watched and read it....

I love how the news anchor shows a picture of the small hookah with Hydro Herbal boxes next to it and claims its tobacco. Amazon has never sold tobacco as far as I know... Only herbal Shisha. I cant believe hes blaming Amazon for his poor parenting and not only wants to get the police involved but also made it a news story. I agree though nice hose =)

^ Agreed

This is just equal parts terrible parenting for not monitoring the kid's internet activities and the business who didn't check or verify the age of the purchaser. However teens/preeteens who are under the legal age limit will always find a way to do illegal activities like buying alcohol and tobacco based products through other means i.e having those who are legal purchasing it and holding it for them or giving it to them Edited by Satou

he cant order tobacco through amazon just pipes, smoking paraphernalia should be/is age restricted I don't see this as a serious hit to the hookah community just amazon and their lax restrictions on tobacco devices. Only thing that will change is amazons policies and who the fuck orders hookah from amazon? Not I...
