Bowl Smoking Time

Recommended Posts

Hey all, i just got done smoking some Al Licorice (awesome flavor btw but thats for reviews) and to be honest, at the end the flavor was completely gone. Ok yah i just chocked it up to a bad pack or not enough molasses, but when i took the foil off the top was carbon completely, like a rock and the bottom was black as night. Now i dont know that if this is how it is supposed to be or if i had to much heat or smoked it for to long, any help would be appreciated, other than trolls. Thanks

Sounds like you cashed the bowl to me... :unknown:

When you "cash" a bowl, that means you completely smoked up the tobacco within it. This is why you were left with no flavor and had a black puck left when you empited out the bowl. Completely normal. :)

about 2-ish hours, and the leila bowl. And yes it was a pretty awesome session lol, so most likely its normal...its just it was 1230 and my sleep deprived brain decided to freak a lil lol

Hello, all the hookah fans! Can I bring this topic up a bit =)?

I want to ask which tobacco brands allow to make long smoking session. I mean that, for example, when I smoke Al Fakher, Nakhla or Starbuzz flavours, I can put only one round of charocal. During that time taste disappears gradually and if I put another charocals, I can get only little more smoke out of the bowl, there is no taste or smoke smell already. On the other hand, unpacking the bowl shows me that there still plenty of wet tobacco here (especially if I pack it tight) and only upper layer become black.

The first idea that I apply too much heat to the bowl, but I always try not to overheat it (i.e. I put two halves of coco on Tangiers Pico Bowl)... So, what I do wrong?.. Or it's possible to smoke Tangiers for four or even six hours? I've tried it only once yet, but it was possible to change coals three or four times during several days and taste was still here and it was gorgeous =)!

So, to summarize, how you deal to get long tasty hookah seesions?

Thanks in advance.

It's possible to smoke Tangiers for MUCH longer than that. Trust me, I've done it before. Once did 8 hours on my Tangiers Mini Phunnel using Tangiers Lucid Indian Summer. Most epic session I ever had.

Tangiers will definitely go the longest. I also like how long Nakhla lasts, which while isn't capable as lasting near as long as Tangiers is, I've gotten some pretty lengthy sessions out of it. I think I once did 4, maybe 5 hours of Nakhla Mizo Guavamelon (Guava and Watermelon mixed) out of my Tangiers Mini Phunnel, but it barely had any flavor left at the end. I can't really speak for other brands beyond Tangiers and Nakhla, as those two are all I really smoke nowadays. Whenever I do try other brands, I never try and see how long they will go.

In my experience, legit Tangiers phunnel bowls allow you to smoke the longest. Then within the Tangiers bowls, the bigger you go, the longer you can smoke. For example, the Large Phunnel smokes many more hours than the Pico. But the Large Phunnel (Medium Phunnel as well) uses so much tobacco and can last so long, it's just too much for me. Mini or Small lasts way longer than I usually want to smoke as it is, so that's what I stick with. Pico may actually be even more perfect for me, but I just don't care to pick one up at the current price that they are. Also, I have the heat management down with my Mini, and I hear it's a bit harder on the Pico, so I just don't care for the hassle. At least not for right now.

As you mentioned, Tangiers is a brand that is quite easy to "necro," or bring the bowl back to smoke yet again the next day or so. Many on here do it. I do not, as I just don't like the flavor after letting the bowl sit around that long. I have however replaced the top charred layer with fresh tobaccy of the same flavor and kept smoking it that way.

Obviously heat management is very important when trying to make a bowl go as far as it possibly can. Burn the bowl with too much coalage, it ain't gonna last long. Finding the perfect amount of coal and being patient (not trying to heat the bowl up too fast by adding more coal than you should rather than adding the right amount and just letting it warm up slowly) are keys to success. Also make sure not to just throw on the second round- edge the second round so that it's less heat. Obviously fresh coals are MUCH hotter than the small bits that were just on the bowl, and this can very quickly lead to harsh flavor, or a burnt bowl. As the new coals ash and become smaller, you can move them in gradually. Play around with how much you edge your coals and you'll figure out the perfect position of where they need to be at certain times during your session.

That's all I've got for now. Hope it helps.

First of all, great thanks to Chreees for so detailed answer, I appreciated it a lot =)!

Secondly, after reading I've understand that it's not enough to just light the coals, so next time I will try to add new ones one by one. I think, with Pico in my case it will produce better results.

Alas, but the question with taste loss is still open to me for the moment. I hope that my new knowledge about heat management will help me. =)

Oh, I've just missed the word "new", when I talked about coals lighting... I mean that my problem was about putting too much heat next round. Hope nevetheless it was clear. =)

And yes, my current cocos of almost ideal half-cube form, so I don't need to cut them! =) Anyway, thank for the advice. =) Edited by MiniMo
