What Hookah Habits Have You Fallen Out Of?

Recommended Posts

Specifically, what did you do when you started/used to smoke that you don't do anymore? Apologies if this has been posted, but it would probably need a new subject anywho.

For me, I've noticed I don't move coals around much at all until they're dead these days, where I used to be anal about making sure the coals were rotated every 15 minutes or so. I wash my hookah far less frequently (helped by the fact that I smoke primarily Nakhla), and also wash my Nammor more like once or twice a month instead of every few smokes.

Anyone else neglect old habits like these?

Things I used to do, but no longer:

1. Move coals. Seriously people, they last forever if you just don't touch them. :)
2. Wash my washable hoses. :P
3. Be anal about cleaning my hookah with baking soda and lemon juice once a week. Now I only ever rinse out with water.
4. Not use a windcover. I used to always light an extra coal or just deal with sucky volume cloudage. Now I use the windcover as a heat management tool. ;)
5. Be so anal about my packing job. I kinda just throw the tobaccy in there now, instead of making it all perfect and spending a lot of time on it. This may just be beacuse I've gotten so used to packing bowls, though...
6. Polish my hookah shanks as frequently. In fact, it's been a good long while since I've polished any of my hookahs. I think last time was when I made the video of polishing my OG Tri. But they still look great, because I found that the shine lasts if you dry off the outside of the shank with a towel whenever you get it wet. ;)

This is all I can think of for now. May post more later if I think of any.

Not roatining the coals, but I also attribute that to better heat management skills.

Washing non washable hoses

Smoke flavors I dont like just because I have them and thought they were just an "aquired taste" (Nak mixed fruit, blah)

rotating the coals
using nour coals (....)
putting ice in the water
washing hoses out (a mya hose, at that) after nearly every smoke
seriously sprinkle stuff in like it was a snow flurry

Underpacking bowls. I used to try to make a gap between the tobacco and foil screen. Now they're all up on each other.

-Worrying about cloud size. If it tastes good, I don't really care if I have whispy little clouds.

I would say the same thing if I had a tiny penis....

its amazing how habits change and you barely notice them. Reading this thread has brought to mind things I use to do that I forgot I did.
-rotating the coals. Yeah I use to do this constantly, now I just let them sit still till their little nubs
-tiny holes. I use to make many tiny holes and very careful arangement of rings. Now its oyster fork all over.
-ice in the base. Was always on about the ice in the vase, I stopped this fairly recently. I just notice it not making that much of a difference so why bother?
-mixing mint in everything. Now I just smoke mint straight :)

-Split Natural Coals for more even heating
-Use a Wind Shield
-Pack less sheesha for less waste
-I use a Mya Freeze Hose
-Wrap Ice Packs around base and stem
-use a diffuser
-Have a glass of water and tea when smoking

holy fuck this one strayed quickly :D
I stopped washing unwashable hoses, I tried naturals and crave them, however I cant get them at the moment, I stopped thinking I wont ever try tangiers since a friend is coming over in an hour or so with 1 kilo, I stopped only smoking one round of coals on any bowl (used to do one round then everything from scratch, now I smoke it till its dead, DEAD!) erm, I used to be careful with moving coals over th ecarpet but after a few mistakes I stopped giving a fuck if that counts :D

Oh gosh...I've stopped so many things:
Putting ice in the base
Using a screen
Using quick lights
Moving coals around every 10-15 min to heat the whole bowl
Using the mya freeze tips or w/e they are called (now have a nammour hose)
Super careful with packing my bowls
For a while was using a needle to poke tons of holes in the foil to make sure the coal didn't get down the holes as much (this was when I used QL's and the god awful taste they give you move them slightly)
Didn't use a wind cover (gotta love wind covers for heat management)
Not use funnel/phunnel bowls because I never knew they existed :P
Smoked mainly Starbuzz (not I go with Tangiers...it's cheaper, tastes great, have great clouds, and typically lasts longer)
Use to smoke bowls for 40min or so before packing a new one...my heat management sucked and didn't know when to call the bowl quits. Now, on a Crown mini funnel, I'll smoke that thing for hours and hours and just have to stop because I'm done :P

All the normal things - QL's, ice, screens - plus I no longer do:

- fruity, sweet candy flavors
- windcovers, unless its actually windy
- expensive tobacco
- washable hoses (tedious job, might as well go with leather anyway)
- "portable" hookahs - why again did I think the backpack hookah was inspired?
- multihose hookahs
- elaborate tobacco mixes
- 50g boxes
- smoking in the AM

However, some things are worth holding onto. Still wash/polish obsessively, and still rock my MNhookah jet glass mini phunnel, scali mod and glass screen.

I used to always put ice in the base.
I only used to use one coal on my little bowl. (Now I know why it would take so long to light up)

I still do a lot of things that these guys are saying they grew out of like cleaning, bowl packing, and heat management.

I have found myslef worrying less about mycloud sizes though. When I smoke with my friends they non stop take massive inhales and they end up having to quit cause they get headaches or something, but I'll be sitting there ready to go another round. I do love a big cloud though.

  • 4 months later...
There are certain things I've given up/traded for better practices.

I no longer put ice in the base, it mutes the flavor and I've learned that with proper heat distribution you won't be dealing with harsh smoke in the first place.
I no longer use Egyptian bowls, I selectively use vortex and phunnel's now.
I no longer use quicklites, with the exception of Chronic Hookah Natty QL's. Thinking of using Holland again just gives me a headache.
I no longer let my hookah sit over night with the remnants of the previous night's shisha/water in it.
I've noticed a lot of people in here saying that they don't put as much time and energy into packing the bowls, however I've found that the opposite is true for me. One of my favorite things about hookah is the ritual involved in setting up the hookah and getting the perfect smoke out of it. I take my time with my bowls, while my coco's are heating up, and I'm rewarded with a perfect smoke everytime.
Now that I've upgraded to a KM I don't think I'll be moving back to a POS chinese rig either.

Over the years I've noticed that as I've learned more about the hookah, and the science to get it to smoke right, I've dropped many bad habits, and developed better ones. I love the hookah because I'm constantly learning new things about it and it gets my mind reeling when I'm not getting good pulls, etc, to figure out what's wrong. Edited by romzz
