I Found That Box This Morning

Recommended Posts

You know, the one box in a move that everything that you have wanted since the move ended up in?  Well, I found it.  Two hoses, a samovar, a couple of older metal bases - and this:

Has anybody seen one like this before?  The base is weighted with sand, I think.  The tray is integral to the shaft.  It unscrews at the top of the jar.  It seems to be brass, with the upper half of the jar section copper.

Next question: should I polish it?  If it is an antique, I would think that would lower the value - but it sure would be purty.

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

Suddenly I can't see my own pictures - can anybody else see them?

Thanks

Man Ziad, you have some pretty neat old stuff! I wish more people had old KMs from when they were more awesome and interesting than what we see today.

As for polishing, typically that devalues things (especially for guns). Since we're just talking about hookahs here, I doubt it really makes a difference. I'd say polish it only if you want to. If you like a more rustic look, keep it as is. I personally would keep it like it is- looks really nice. :)

Hassouni - yeah, I know that - it does say Khaleel Ma'moun in the cartouche in the stamp on the tray, and the one underneath. I just have no idea how old it is, or if there is a model name, or anything like that. Pictures coming on the samovar.

Chreees - Yeah, I have watched Antiques Roadshow with La Contessa; she would kill me if I over-cleaned or polished it. I will probably leave it mostly as it is.

I will get pics of the rest of the stuff that was in the magic box, including the samovar, and have them up in a bit.

A different angle

Okay, what is this? Is this a Hindi style hookah?

And this is an art nouveau tea kettle with stand and spirit lamp. I just like it.

Dude, sweeeeeet collection. I love your larger hose, too. Awesome looking!

And I say polish that thing up.

Thank you all! Does anybody recognize the sort-of silverish basket-work thing in the second group, fifth picture? I saw something somewhere that indicated it might be a Hindi tombak-style hookah, but I really don't know anything about it.

Thanks again!

Those are very interesting. Does anyone have more information on these pipes? What year they were likely made, how they were used, etc? Are they very heavy?

Hi! I really don't know any more about the provenance - date of manufacture, or anything like that. I found it in an antique store in about 2006; it looked old then, not much older now. It isn't much heavier than a glass-base hookah; there is sand sealed into the base as a weight for stability.

I feel like the Genie of the Hookah should pop out when I clean it.
