ettin
Hi, ive had a bit of trouble with the bowl falling off, its made smoking an unnerrving experience as the slightest movement can send the coal flying into the floor. Is there a clamp for sale somewhere? Or any ideas on how to make one?
rhineholt
What you can do is use a wet paper towel instead. That works for me all the time. Just wet a paper towel, fold it, wrap it where the grommet would go, then push the bowl on!

I tend to use damp paper towel strips as gaskets 80% of the time, even though I now currently have decent rubbers.

gramps
I'm turning more and more towards cloth tape. I picked up a few brass fittings from the hardware store; 1" to 3/4" reducer, 3/4 to 3/4 barbed fitting, etc., and tape seems to work great on those when adapting a Tangiers phunnel to my Elmas. The tape is actually waterproof first-aid tape (not duct tape) and the connections are airtight and stable.

ettin
Oh, i already have a grommet that the bowl sits on, it still falls off. I need some sort of clamp to hold the bowl to the grommet.
ettin
I see, you mean use paper in place of the grommet so it sits lower on the metal barb. Even without the grommet its still pretty unstable, i'd like to be able to move the hookah around without worrying about the bowl falling off and the only way to do that is to clamp them together. So theres nothing to do this? I cant be the only one who feels nervous using such an unstable device.
gramps
Something must be wrong. I can put a bowl on my hookah (without tobacco and coals, of course ) and turn the whole thing upside down and the bowl doesn't fall off. The bowl is held tightly in place by the grommet, which itself fits tightly on the stem. Could you give a little more info on which hookah, bowl, and grommets you're using? What happens is that with some bowls, they are fine when you put them on the pipe, but as you smoke, they slide up the rubber gasket and become loose. The solution being suggested here, is to not use the rubber gasket, but instead, use a wet paper towel and roll it around the bowl port on your pipe, where the rubber gasket would have been, and push the bowl on it the same way you would have put it on the rubber gasket. The wet paper towel prevents the bowl from sliding up during the session and keeps it in it's place all tight!
dizzbizz
If this is a normal egyptian bowl and any other bowl with the holes on the bottom of the bowl, I bet the shisha juices are coming between the grommet and the hookah or between the grommet and the bowl, causing the bowl to become loose and fall off. Paper towels work wonders. I get a sheet, cut it into quarters, about the size of a toilet paper sheet and fold it long ways twice. Wet it, get most of the water out by squeezing it, and wrap it on the hookah. Should be good to go.
squidget
if you feel uncomfortable using just paper towels, you can combine the two. Step 1. place grommet on pipe. Step 2. place a strip of wet paper towel around grommet - should wrap twice around and be no more than an inch thick (length of strip) Step 3. place bowl on grommet/paper towel combo. This way you prevent the bowl from slipping up the grommet and you do not have to use such a large piece of paper towel.
ettin
I have a mnh glass bowl, not sure which hookah, it only sits 1/4" onto the grommet. I'll try the paper towels but i dont see how thats supposed to stabilize it.

[/quote] Your bowl stem isn't secure with the grommet you're using - the function of the grommet is to ensure a tight seal btwn the hookah stem and bowl and it sound like yours is just perched on top. There are a number of sizes and styles of bowl grommets - I have mod grommets - the big thick ones, KM and mya grommets. Sometimes I use a combination of two, say a KM grommet and a mya bowl grommet, to get a tight seal. I also have a MNH glass phunnel that I use quite often and use the harder plastic KM or the flexible mya, depending which KM I am using. I use paper towel as well as a grommet to use this bowl with my syrian. Knowing what stem you're using might help with troubleshooting if you're still having problems
ryno
I use a MNH mini glass phunnel all the time and rubber grommets will cause the bowl to push up and possibly off the hookah. A thin layer of wet paper towel is your best bet. It helps absorb the juices that run down and get on the grommet.
Skoozle
The short answer is you need a gasket that is the right size for your bowl and stem. I can pick my hookah up (without water in the base) by the bowl when the bowl in on correctly. Post a pic; we can help.

It just slips off otherwise.
A13lackFish
You could always avoid the paper towel gasket if you want to go with the original one. Just make sure to wipe the gasket and rinse it before each smoke as to remove any juice from the previous session.
