Looking To Buy My First Hookah

Recommended Posts

I've been doing some research and reading the comments from previous posts about the types of hookahs. I have decided on a one hose, medium sized hookah but still wanted some advice/explanation.

People seem to prefer the phunnel bowl, but why? How do the three different types differ when it comes to smoking?

Is ordering it online better than going to a smoke shop? I'm skeptical of ordering something for $100+ that I haven't seen in person, but the prices online seem more reasonable.

I have been looking at some of the trusted vendors people mentioned, and i think I want this one hookahjohn.com/Nour-28-inch-Brass-Hookah-41A-B.htm It seems so much cheaper than the other ones offered on the same site though...is it not as good?

If i found a vase I really like that is sold separately, is it as simple as buying the stem separately as well and creating my own look? Are there any special considerations to keep in mind?

And finally, which hookahs do you guys use and where did you get them?

Thanks!

The syrian you are looking at is a solid pipe but unfortunately it is out of stock.

While I would prefer to order in person if you do not know what you are looking for or are not going to the right place it is better to buy online.

Keep in mind there are discount coupons for most sites.

HJs syrians look quite nice and should smoke well if you are into a somewhat restricted draw. One thing to keep in mind is that the hose is pretty cheap and something you will want to upgrade, so I would factor that into the price.

The Faridas from nazarhookah are excellent build quality and are pretty unique. They are definitely a pipe I would put onto your list. Pretty reasonable price as well. I would not be considered about ordering one of these sight unseen as Mahir is an excellent vendor and not going to sell you a shoddy product.

Khalil Mamoons are also quite popular on this site, come in a wide variety of styles, and are pretty accessible from almost any vendor.

Keep in mind a huge part of the decision making process is based on personal preference.

It is not as easy as just buying a new vase, it must be tall enough to allow adequate space for the downstem and have an opening that fits the hookah (also this is flexible as there are many sized grommets)

ok first off imma adress the few things i can. If this is your first hookah dont buy a phunnel bowl its is more difficult to pack and heat manage (Correct me if im wrong guys) so i would go with something simple maybe the bowl that comes with or even a Vortex. also ordering offline is usually the better route unless you have a smoke shop around you that sells KM's or someother known brand otherwise you have no idea what your buying an 99% of the time is a cheep Egyptian (not that its a bad thing just that most shops over price hookahs like that, around me anyway). And as the Vase its a grey area for me as i havent really gone down this road and im newer here as well, but from what i understand there are a few ways stems can connect to the vase, through screwing on, or through a simple seal (Such as grommets which are plastic seals made to fit hookahs or even wet paper towels though i have never tried this way). Finally at the moment i only have a leila portable hookah that i bought from hookah-shisha.com (Found herehttp://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-2808-leila-1-hose-portable-hookah.html) but i suggest going with NazarHookah.com as he is a on the form and from what i understand an all around good guy. Hope i Could help!

I saw it was out of stock but was hoping another site would have it as well. Which hose should I upgrade to? I am now looking at this one http://www.nazarhookah.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=94_66_87&products_id=600 I really love how it looks, though it is a bit bigger and more pricey than i was originally considering. I'll see how much everything is with the discount codes

The KM you're looking at from Nazar Hookah is very fine pipe. You shouldn't need to upgrade the hose if you buy that one. If and when you decide to buy another hose, the Razan hoses Mahir sells are great. I have one and have really enjoyed it.

I don't think you will find that syrian in stock anywhere as they are kind of hard to come by right now. Hopefully someone with a KM oxide pipe can chime in if there is any chance of losing it when the pipe is cleaned.

Have yall heard anything about dirt cheap hookahs? This one is only $50 which is shockingly cheap so I'm assuming Aztek must be lower quality http://www.dirtcheaphookahs.com/aztek-large-26-inch-hookah-p-668.html They also have cheaper KM http://www.dirtcheaphookahs.com/km-blue-caramana-hookah-egyptian-blue-p-857.html. The one from Nazar is my favorite though and trust the quality from everything you guys have been saying. Thanks for the help!

The first you posted is a knock off of a Chinese brand, Mya

If you are looking to spend a $100 I would take something like this over a pear. Pears are extremely common and IMO kind of boring.

First off, welcome to HF! :)

I'd say just hold out a bit if you really want a Syrian... Some are going to be hitting the market soon. ;) As for the Syrian you posted, not only is it out of stock as mentioned already, but the hose ports are really small. The ones that are coming should not be like that. They'll be the ones with the bigger ports. I own one and it's my favorite pipe, hands down. They're made by the Al Nawras company, but imported by Nour. So you'll often see the names used interchangeably.

Other than Syrian, I'd say either a Khalil Mamoon or Farida (some models are $114) from NazarHookah.com would be great. I actually am really impressed with the Faridas, moreso than the models KM is putting out these days (especially the oxide ones, which I know several people have just polished off so that they were left with just a trimetal).

Phunnels are the best bowl, in my opinion. I just love them. Good bowl for anything and everything. Any tobacco will work out of it pretty much. Now that's not to say that everyone will like every tobacco brand out of it. For example, for Nakhla, I prefer my clay Elmas bowl. But I also really love Nakhla out of my phunnels. Tangiers works best in it, but many other brands will work great as well- Starbuzz, Al Fakher, Nakhla... whatever. It's just a good all-around bowl to have in your collection.

As for good vendors, check out NazarHookah.com, Kasbah.us, HookahCompany.com, Hookah-Shisha.com, UltimateHookah.com, 5StarHookah.com, and CrownHookah.com, just off the top of my head.

I recommend making sure you have a good hose. My personal favorite is the Razan from Nazar.

Good quality coals are a must. My favorites right now are the Razans from Nazar, but Coconaras and Cocomazayas, among a few others, are all good as well.

You can pick out a shank separately and then buy a vase, but understand it'll probably end up costing more and then you also have to make sure you get all the accessories such as hose, tongs, proper gasket (most vendors fit the right gasket to the shank/vase combo you buy when you purchase a complete rig), etc.

Looks like you're off in the right direction... Plenty of good advice already, and more to come I'm sure. Let us know what you end up getting, and if you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask! We'll try our best to help you out. Again, welcome to the forum, and hope you enjoy it here. :Hookah:
