Do I Need Any More Bowls?

Recommended Posts

Right now I currently have 2 crown micro phunnels, a crown classic, the normal MYA qt bowl, and last but not least my tangiers small phunnel. So while i'm still experimenting with new tobacco's I'm curious do I really need to look for any more bowls? Opinions?

I'd replace the Mya bowl with one of those brown glazed Egyptians bowls. But that's just me being picky! Sounds like you have all your bases covered...

Sorry, but the LAST thing you need is a vortex.

I would say a Flying Saucer Bowl though , smokes Tangiers very well and uses a fraction of the tobacco. I will load it up with anything other than Nak :)

I have a
tangiers large
tangiers medium
tangiers small x2
tangiers mini x2(soon)
tangiers medium superchief
tangiers small superchief
tangiers mini superchief (soon)
HJ alien new gen
HJ alien old gen
HJ FSB (sucks)
crown micro x2
crown signature funnel

from what I've tried I would recommend a new alien for sure, and maybe a crown signature funnel if crown is your thing. these suggestions were based on usability/performance and availability/cost Edited by littlec

Err. I smoke from my vortex just fine. It's annoying to hear anyone bash a bowl. The vortex is really good for really really wet tobacco's because it actually boils the shisha instead of baking it. I'm about to get a funnel and my vortex will probably lie idle for quite a while, but I have smoked from most bowls except for a funnel and I like my vortex the most. But like I said still haven't tried a funnel. Should be getting mine in either late today or tomorrow.

When you switch to a Tangiers phunnel you will see why. The vortex has poor heat retention. I used it a fair amount and never ended up spending the entire bowl.

Why would you use a FSB over a vortex?

It has the same build quality as the Alien Mini. Rather than being deep and made of hollow porcelain like the Vortex, it's shallow and wide and made from heavier clay.

One can never have enough bowl pieces for your hookah - it is always good to have spares just incase you might break one or obtain a new hookah that might have a cruddy bowl with it.

Why would you use either?

Get a tangiers small or an alien. same clay, good design. If you want to use a fail design get the FSB (vortex/phunnel hybrid) or just to the chase and use a vortex. With all the bowls I own and have tried, the FSB was by far the worst I have used since the vortex.

I could not disagree more. Like Epoch already said, the FSB is made from clay that is able to hold and distribute heat evenly and appropriately, unlike the Vortex which does not. Some have also had issues with the Vortex having air flow issues due to the holes getting clogged, which is a non issue with the FSB due to the holes being above the rim of the bowl.

It is also one of the easiest bowls to manage heat with, as coals do not lay directly on the tobacco. I have smoked Tangiers out of mine multiple times and they have been great sessions. If you don't know how to pack and manage the heat on it, that is your fault, not the bowls. It hardly makes it a failed design. If I recall, these were original a limited run, and now its regularly available. That does not spell out failed design.

If I am looking for a shorter session and to use less tobacco, my FSB beats my Alien Mini out until I am able to get a mini phunnel.

To be honest, you really only need one bowl. But it is nice to have a lot of bowls on hand. I find myself using the same three bowls over and over again. Alien, Mini and Small Phunnels. I had some glass bowls, but they just collected dust. One of them I never even used. I have quite a few egyptian bowls but it's been a while since I smoked anything other than Tangiers.

I suggest you read reviews and get bowls that you find interesting. If you like them, you will use them, if you don't like them put them in the trades section. Eventually you will have a set of bowls that you are happy with.

When I was looking for a house, my real estate agent would take my wife and I to a bunch of houses and when we would find a really great house, he would ask "Is this the best house we have seen yet?" and if we said yes he would reply "Ok, this is the one to beat, let's keep looking"

Decide what is your favorite bowl for each tobacco or type of tobacco and then keep your eye out for something that might be better.

I agree to a point. If I were limited to only one bowl, it'd be the small Tangiers phunnel. But there's nothing like smoking Nakhla in a clay Elmas bowl - it's like the two were made for each other.

I bought a lot of bowls, but have sold off a good many so now I'm left with two Tangiers Mini Phunnels, a Tangiers Small Phunnel, a clay Elmas standard bowl, and a clay Egyptian standard bowl. Out of them all, pretty much one Mini gets used. Gonna get some more Nakhla soon, so will be using the Elmas bowl for it a lot, because as gramps mentioned, they go perfectly together for whatever reason.

You just haven't found out what you really love. Try out different ones, determine what you love the most. Then sell the rest off you don't use. Or just keep them to have yourself a nice little collection. :)
