alyehoud
A while back I went to a local hookah bar to see if I would enjoy it enough to buy one (I smoke cigars). I smoked several different flavors, and a mix of a couple, and every one of them had the same "background" taste. Is this just because the hookahs have been used by so many people with so many flavors, OR is it an inherent taste that all hookahs have? Any info would be much appreciated.TIA
Scalliwag
sounds to me like they might not clean their hookahs good
Skimo
thats what i would think, hookah bars that dont clean their hookahs have nasty tastin shit in the smoke haha, maybe even the hose
DownZero
Yeah, it seems that the bar your going to is not cleaning out the hookahs very well after each use.. The hookah bars here in San Antonio can get pretty busy at times and I doesn't seem like they do much maintenace after each use. Maybe you go too late in the bar's business day and the hookahs have been around a lot since their last cleaning. I recommend trying another hookah bar, hopefully you can get a more pleasant smoke. I can imagine cigar smokers enjoying the hookah.
DizzyGuy
Yup... Lack of cleaning. It killed me once... At a local hookah bar, I went in to smoke a hookah with two friends... not only did we get a tiny three hose hookah where the pull was shit, but it had had salvia smoked several times out of it so we had that taste overpower the shisha :/

I was there this summer and visited two hookah lounges and was really impressed by one, the other had good smoke, bad flavour, and worse atmosphere
novicafe
its because of the continuous use of the hookahs. at no.vi they get very busy especially at night. there is no time to clean every hookah after each use. although our hookahs are cleaned throughly everyday, and hose are cleaned after each use. Scalliwag
It seems like if you have that good of business you could double up the hookah inventory so it would cut the problem in half
novicafe
We run over 60 hookahs right now. Its very expensive to keep the place running appliance wise along with rent fees in one of the richest places in Michigan.

htdsngup
My local hookah bar does about 17 different flavors. The cool thing is that they dedicate hookahs, bowls, and even hoses to the exact flavor. Since they charge 50% off for the second bowl, it has to b the same flavor or they wont do it.Sometimes there will be at least 70 ppl there man sharing hookahs and every hookah/hose/head is dedicated.Thats extreme hookahing....unless ALL hookah bars do that. Then i feel dumb
arik
no, not all of them do it
novicafe
On a friday night we get 400+ people in and out of the shop smoking. We have over 60 different flavors, and that doesn't count all of our custom mixes. Gets crazy.
EvansLight
yea the one i go to has the same problems some times. Most of the time you can almost always get a hint of mint in the hookah. its the most ordered flavour there, and i like it so it dosent bother me much. novicafe
Yeah mint always sticks in the hookahs unless you spend a decent amount of time cleaning them. Personally I hate mint.
EvansLight
i love it so as i said doesnt bother me. Granted the mint i currently have is awesome just cause it tastes like mint toothpaste

I know it's not that simple. But after thinking about the dilemna it seems you could setup some sort of Pump type sprayer with a lemon juice mix in it and a coned shaped tip that would fit in all the different orifices and give them a quick hit with that and rinse the stems. That or have a few more stems than hookahs hand have a little vat so they could soak a while and then just rinse before you use it?

Lukasa
I think you're tasting the general taste of burning (cooking) hookah tobacco. As a cigar smoker myself, i find that the general taste of shisha is MUCH different than the general taste of cigars. Keep in mind that the tobacco's are cured and prepared much differently.
Sonthert
Actually, it may also be the footprint of the foundation. Since you smoke cigars, I kinda know where you are coming from. There is a background flavor all brands have. We, as regulars, filter out that background noise, never even noticing it. Each brand has their own, based on whether it is made with what sweetner, the type and quality of the tobacco and other factors. Maybe thats it...if I understand the subtext of your question. Many people find that they become accustomed to a specific foundation flavor and find others harsh. I personally find Al Fahker and Al Amir harsh, because I smoke Tangiers all the time.
