What Size Is Your.....

Recommended Posts

First topic here. Breaking my post cherry. I am a welder. I love to design things. I'm working on something that involves ice.
So my question is what is the size of ice everyone uses in their hookah?
I will eventually post pictures of my mad science welding experiments. I need to figure out a good average because I find it annoying I have to crush ice to make it fit in the base.
My ice for example is 3in long 1in tall and 1 1/4in wide. Posting pictures would be appreciated too! Thanks

I LOVE mad science welding experiments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Haha cant wait to see what this thing is!

I went through all sorts of grief back in the day trying to find ways to get cubes easily into vases - special trays for crazy shaped ice, etc. Finally got weary and stopped fooling with it at all, evidently it weakens the flavors of the smoke somewhat anyway.

Why on earth are you using 3" long ice cubes? Those seem huge. With such a wide range of hookah base openings, it would be difficult to determine an "average" size - we might need more info here.

I agree with Judy. I don't mess with ice anymore because I found overall it weakens the flavor. So I think while you may have fun with this contraption for now, but you may come to the same conclusion as many of us and decide not to use ice anymore. I have a feeling you have probably a Chinese hookah. Bigger hookahs such as the Khalil Mamoons and Faridas have large bases, therefore are much easier to put ice in.

I am interested to see what you create, though! :)

I'm using a mya 16" with a Romanian made base. The experiment doesn't use ice in the base but i still use a little ice it's melted by the time I get rolling. I'm hoping to have it made by Friday of next week

I'm in the no ice camp too. I used ice a few times before and just used the standard ice maker cubes. I have even used hot water a couple of times too.

I did think about it back then and one thing I wanted to try but never got around to is filling the vase all the way up to the rim with crushed ice but no water in the vase. I think that would be a cool (lol) experience, but lost interest in ice before I ever tried it.

You will probably have as much fun design and building it as you will using it, so have fun and let us know what you come up with.

I only use ice when its really hot out and when i feel like having bigger clouds. But i used to use those ice trays for water bottles that make them like 4 inches long and only 1/2 an inch thick

I used to have a crussed ice machine at HookahBliss. But i didnt like to put ice in the base because we washed the bases after every use and i didnt want the temp change to crack anything. Since you say you wont be putting the ice in the base i am looking forward to seeing this contraption. :)

I remember when chillers were all the rage around here..everyone wanted an ice bucket on their stems. :)

i Must be one of the only peeps who does ice more often then not. I just go with the cube tray that is 1 inch thick maybe about 1 1/2 inch in length. The sound of the ice bouncing around on the inhale is almost therapeutic to me now.

I don't do the ice thing, tried it in the past, flavor became mute because of it.

But, when I did, we either used ice from trays or from the ice maker in the freezer. We have also used "Sonic" ice.

I do remember I had a super small Chinese made Egyptian style. !8" from base to top of stem. I couldn't get any cube down into the base so what I did was just pour some tap water into a cup added the Ice cubes to that. Meantime I packed my bowl. When i finished that most of the cube reduced to a size that could fit through the neck. First time i saw my km base i was really surprised how big it was

I MISS this. Reminds me of the good old days when I used to spend more time smoking and less time searching for elusive brass stems :(

I used these wierd fish candy molds - made the best iced fishies ever, sometimes froze oj in them. Dumped into a giant clear jug with a hobohookah stem on top and a bowl of DA = the most fun you can have for cheap at a backyard bbq. Sigh.

Not really, DA overpowers alot of flavors - just wanted orange fish and thot it might work :) Straight oj and alot of twists, yes could taste it then, but was a horrible mess and a real waste of oj :(

That was something else I was interested in was why brass? Would a surgical stainless steel work? 308 class I believe or 300s
I'm researching metals that would be safe to smoke out too because my metal project is going to need a new stem due to the change. And last thing I want is Alzheimer's or something due to using the wrong metal.
But if brass is way better than I can make a stem probably at my work out of brass. Any information on that too helps thanks

Brass and copper oxidizes the smoke. Turns monoxide into dioxide. And dioxide is alot less poisonous.
