vendetta_revived
The problem is that this will most likely not affect hookah products, hookah being a small part of the smoking industry, and being *OMG SO MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN CIGS!!!*...ahem... at least how I see it. Chreees
The problem is that this will most likely not affect hookah products, hookah being a small part of the smoking industry, and being *OMG SO MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN CIGS!!!*...ahem... at least how I see it.
Yep, I agree... But it means we have somewhat of a fighting chance, if we raise enough awareness somehow. I believe citizens should be able to do as they wish, as long as it does not hurt others. By this, I mean I feel that SOME tobacco anti-smoking laws are legit, like the ones where you can't smoke in federal buildings and whatnot. But I disagree with ones such as states where NO restaurants, bars, etc. (some even ban smoking in all hotels) can have smoking. I feel that should be left up to the owner in situations like that, as citizens have a right to choose what establishments they enter. Hell, even designated smoking rooms or something... Too bad there are no lobbyists for the hookah tobacco companies... As I've said it before, this is America, and they should be able to let small business thrive. Instead they piss on it, and then even spit on top of the piss for extra measure.
antouwan
"there might be no point in adamantly protecting the constitution if you're doing it at the expense of human lives" i wish this dumb idiot would explain that to anyone in our armed forces... what compounds this further is that the idiot in the black shirt then proceeds to think that the judge makes judgements on economic issues, when in fact, a judge's job is to make judgements based upon legal issues. all of this banter about "capitalist country" exposes this gentleman for what he is: an idiot who won't stop waffling on. dumbasses like these make lose faith in democratic/republican systems, or any system that would make my action (or any other person with a somewhat educated opinion on a topic - not smoking, per se) equal to the actions of those with a negligable positive impact on society (or even a negative impact on society) before the law (eg a vote). this is where hierarchies make sense. more people ≠ more right. 1 ≠ 1. think of how the rest of society is structured: first-line workers/employees have managers and so forth and so on, privates report to captains who report to ranking officers and so on, students take instruction from teachers and so on. there is this natural order that has to exist to get shit done. democracy says, "okay, we'll go ahead and let the students run the class." or, "privates will run the army" or "employees will run the company, be responsible for everything from daily activities to long-term strategy planning" ad infinitum. sorry to thread jack, but dumb people frustrate me endlessly. /rant. Rani
Is it just me, or is it that damnit, if someone wants to kill themselves with something, like liquor, or cigarettes, or jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, a government, any government should not have the right to stop them from exercising their free will to drink or smoke or jump off a bridge? The argument frequently heard is "yes, but we pay the health insurance increases of tobacco deaths". So make health insurance unavailable for smoking related illness. Or alcohol related illness. Or jumping off a bridge illness. Whatever. Instead, they start banning people from being able to do pretty much anything we want to do that might be harmful. Maybe certain activities should simply not be covered by health benefits, or whatever. But I don't think the government should be banning things left and right, or by trying to influence us. This is no different that the new laws in several states forcing women to look at a sonogram before getting an abortion. I'm not endorsing harm causing activities for anyone, but the government should not be involved and there's nothing from preventing them to going further. We now are forced to wear helmets on not just motorcycles, but bicycles. We can't buy flavored cigarettes in this country any more. I mean, really, it's just getting more and more out of hand. Whatever happened to that whole God given free will thing? Or the "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" promise in the Constitution? I have finally come to realize that government, all government is evil. It's a soulless corrupt entity that has no function except to control a population. The best you can hope for it that it's benign enough to leave you alone, and when it comes to the US it's anything but benign anymore. It's just a little sneakier than say Sadam Hussein about ruining all the fun. 'Rani

gramps
I think if cities insist on having city-wide bans on smoking (even outdoors for Pete's sake!!), then they shouldn't take one penny from tobacco taxes. Otherwise they're just being hypocrites.

gramps
Not far from here is a city that bans smoking in city owned vehicles. I saw a man standing beside a tractor smoking. It was a city tractor that was used for mowing the sides of the streets and roads, so, even though it didn't have an enclosed cab, the operator had to stop and get off the tractor to smoke a cigarette. Apparently the city council members are slobbering idiots, and so are the people who vote them into office.
