Epoch
The problem with ordering small stuff is that often the vendors ship using the standard-size "if it fits, it ships" boxes. You find yourself paying $10-$15 dollars shipping small items.
Pavo21
i even changed some orders around and it still is just expensive i'd rather drive around and look for it
Rani
I order almost everything online, but I never place an order that isn't at least $40-50, so a flat shipping rate doesn't both me so much. It does get to me if it's all tobacco and the box is a flat rate box when I paid a much larger rate for it though. I just think shipping should be fair, you know? Toss 50 gram packs in a bubble envelope and call it a day. Maybe calling in the order instead of going through the automatic system online would make a difference. mavsfan31
Just order in bulk is all you have to do. My orders are always at least decently sized so flat rate shipping doesn't bother me at all.
â€On
You think that's bad pavo? Imagine being Canadian. Because of my countries hate-boner for tobacco and their love of taxing the ever loving crap out of us, I feel like a columbian drug runner every time I go to order shisha.
Mahir
In a bubble mailer, 3 50g packs fit and should be shipped with USPS First Class Mail. Also, 1 250g of Nakhla also fits in a bubble mailer. Remember : First Class Mail has a 13oz limit. Anything over that goes to Priority Mail or other ground carriers such as FedEx or UPS.
gramps
Why is hookah tobacco exempt from the postal regulations prohibiting the mailing of tobacco? The Post Office won't deliver cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snus, or snuff. Why is this different?

gramps
They did. I've had to order my snus using UPS since then, and an adult has to sign for it.

gramps
Or maybe they don't know! After all, the Post Office is run by the 'Mo' brothers - Moron and Molasses.
Chreees
Seriously though, that's very standard... Not just because of vendor's flat shipping rates of $10, but because it isn't as cheap to ship things as it used to be. I've noticed over the years that I've been selling stuff (I use USPS most) that shipping prices have increased a lot. Vendors do the flat $10-11 shipping rates because they make money on shipping sometimes when it's small things like tobacco, but they often lose money when it comes to shipping large orders like hookahs. So to balance it out and not make their shipping prices seem ridiculous to customers, they average it out by just charging $10 flat. At least, this is my reasoning behind it. I may be a bit off, or way off. Any vendors care to chime in?
For whatever reasons, that doesn't apply to hookah tobacco (pipe tobacco more specifically, which hookah tobacco is classified under). EDIT: I believe the reason they did this was to make more taxes go to the states by forcing people to buy their cigarettes locally instead of online. Eventually they're going to attack other things we buy online (or all) since we don't pay tax on those goods... Damn gov.
Mahir
When all is said and done, it's all politics. Chris, you are right about the balancing effect. I lose $5-10 when I ship hookahs. Medium Flat rate boxes no longer cost $10 either. It's about $11. So either way I look at it I lose. Sure beats paying for calculated rates. When I do have some extra money to spend on myself, I'll do my best to make sure you get part of it.

Skoozle
It's OK for you to go check the price at the post office for one package, but think about what one of these big hookah stors would have to do to send out samples one by one. For a $3 pack of tobacco, some one has to go to the warehouse to get the tobacco, go to the shipping area and get a tiny box for the tobacco, calculate shipping, print a lable and box it up. They are paying someone hourly to do all that which would take probably half an hour. So they just spent more in labor than your whole order cost. They only made $.25 profit off the tobacco in the first place then had to pay for a box and label paper and ink on top of that. Flat rate shipping or at least having a minimum of $8 shipping discourages tiny orders like this which are very expensive for the vendor. It's the same reason you don't stop at every gas station along your trip and get $.50 worth of gas. You fill up or get as much as you can when you need gas then drive til your gas light comes on again. Edited March 13, 2012 by Skoozle

king_lunchb0x
Weight has a lot to do with how much shipping would be...if its not in one of the priority flat rate boxes its not going to be cheap
Judy Oma
I order everything I smoke online, all of the time. I have no local distributors in my area, or state for that matter. So the cost of shipping gets figured into the cost of the tobacco -- always. This is one of the reasons that "premium" tobaccos are generally not of interest to me.
