Possible Stem Issue...help.

Recommended Posts

Okay so I was planning on smoking tonight, and well...that didn't happen. I got everything set up and went to purge and nothing. I could inhale through the hose but I couldn't breath through the hose and purge easily. So I dismantled everything, took the stem off of the base and breathed through the hose port and was barely able to breath through it. I tried cleaning it out and blew air threw it and then it was clear no problem, and then I tried to blow air through the purge valve and that was no longer clear. I cleaned that out and still have not gotten it to be "cleared" out. I clean every part of my hookah after every smoke, usually right after, so it's not even sitting there over night, so I'm not sure whats going on. Grr, anyone have any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is that the purge valve may have rusted a bit, and get stuck whenever its idle.

There are 2 ways you can try to fix this that have worked well for me:

1. Take the ball bearing out and rub some oil on it (cooking or olive) and put it back in.
2. Get some of those plastic b-b's from airsoft guns, this will work in the long term.

Either way, it can't hurt to do this, might help!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to try the plastic bb when I get the chance, but hopefully the oil will do the trick. I wrote my initial post when I was rather tired last night and forgot one important fact haha. Once I got the hose port cleared up I put the stem back onto the base with water in it. I attached the hose and tried to breath into it again, and I couldn't. I took the hose out and tried to breath through the hose port and still couldn't breath through it even with the metal purge valve ball taken out. I then took the stem out of the base and was able to breath through it fine. So, even if I can get air flow through the hose port, once i put it on my base it's a no go.

What kind of hookah you got?

I have a KM, Mahir from Nazar sold it to me and a couple other members and I have tried to figure out what the "name" of it is but no luck.

Still sounds like a little rust problem, even with no ball in there. Maybe take off that cap and scrape out whatever may be in there, and then do the plastic BB.

What you described makes sense, how when its on the vase you can't blow through it, and when its off you can. Try it out and let us know, also, pictures.

If its not a stuck bearing/rust in the purge port, I've got no idea what else it could be. The mechanics of the hookah are pretty simple, thank goodness. That happened to me a few weeks ago, of course after changing bowls, hoses etc that was the LAST thing I checked

Alright well, if it is rust what do you guys recommend I use to get rid of the rust? After I have gotten the rust out then I will try the BB for the purge port.

I want to smoke! Grr. <_< Edited by Teganv

The Mya QT i had ended up having the purge ball stuck after a while. It was not rust, just gunk. The purge was sealed and the only way to unstick it was to poke it from the bottom. I ended up just unscrewing the purge off anytime i felt the need to purge.

After a while though, the purge won't be that necessary, and you don't REALLY need it. this could be an opportunity to perfect your heat management :)

Well I cleaned the heck out of my hookah and polished it and everything, put a plastic BB in the purge valve...and it still isn't working. So I guess no more purge valve for me. I mean other then that it works fine so I guess I will just have to perfect my heat management, like you said mustang.

try shining a light down both the top of the hose port and the top of the purge port and looking at the bottom to see how much light passes through. find some pipe cleaners(the ones used for cleaning briar pipes and such) and run them through a few times. if that doesnt work i dont know what will.

then again you could have a drillbit stuck in your purge pipe like my first KM did...

But wouldn't that make it impossible to purge regardless of whether you have the stem inserted in the base or not? But, (if I understand the OP correctly) she is having trouble purging when the stem in the base, but can purge fine if it's not.

I for one can't think of a single reason why this is happening.
