Stuie
So after smoking over a decade I finally have a run in with the cops. The family and I left the house for church yesterday, and the dog got out of her crate and set off the alarm. Never heard my phone so ADT dispatched police. I stupidly forgot to lock the back door. So as I answer the phone finally and head to the house, cops are there looking for a possible intruder in my house (man that feels like a violation, even thought I know they were looking a potential burglar). As I arrive they are talking to my neighbors, and I think nothing of it at the time. So here's the gist of the following conversation. Me: Hello, Here's my driver's license and CHL. Cop: Any weapons on you? Me: No, only in the house at the moment. Cop: You know you left your gunsafe open? Me: Sorry forgot to lock after putting my handgun up this morning (*thinks* Oh great here it comes. Hand gun safe is above my shelfs of tobacco...okay shit ton of tobacco and OG Trimetal is sitting just out side the closet) Cop: Have to ask you about the B**** and tobacco. Me: They aren't B***** they are hookahs, and yes it's tobacco. Cop: Do you sell or use weed? Me: No, strictly tobacco. Cop: We get concerned when we see that stuff and kids are in the house. Me: (*Thinks* You mention the initials C, P or S and I will bring down Hell Fire that will make you beg for death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Cop: We noticed the industrial scale in your garage... Me: You mean the digital Postal Scale I use to sell on eBay *points to eBay Trading Assistant Sticker taking up the entire back window of my car* Cop: Okay, when we see these things together they send up warning signs. My partner is talking to our SGT. to see if we need to file an incident report. *Go in to put up the dog and the cop follows me in. I show them out and reset the alarm, then walk over to thier cars* Me: *I stand off intergecting as they talk to each other* I don't sell tobacco. They are hookahs not b****! Cop: SGT says hookah is this new tobacco thing and not to worry about it unless you admit to having or selling weed. Me: Only tobacco (serioulsy this shit again, does that ever work?!?!?! Wait hookah is a new thing...who knew!) WHEN DID I BECOME THE BAD GUY WHEN THERE WAS A POTENTIAL BREAK IN AT MY HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bullshited with them for about 15 minutes talking about my Castle Law sign, cops that live on my street and that I know personally. And all the Brass i know way above them from thier SGT to the Chief and former Chief now Mayor. And that my Dad's name is on their paychecks. When your dad is the lead account for the City for the last 3 decades, you get to know a lot of cops. I left and went back to be with my family and talked to my criminal lawyer friend on the way. Says my bases are covered. Still seriously...WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ChicagoRSX
Well...I really don't see the cops being dicks to you, unless they were talking down to you like you were a child, so this story doesn't seem that bad to me.
king_lunchb0x
the only thing that is irritating is that they really dont take your word for shit...yeah i know a lot of people lie to the cops but they went into your house and saw everything on display all the tobacco pipes, if there was drugs im sure they would have tried to find some. Just irritating they saw nothing but just could not let it go.
They really weren't dicks, but they did bring up the weed and you have kids A LOT!!!! I put cops one rung below politicians on the curroption scale. But as you noticed... We didn't talk about the possibility of an actual break in... it was all me and my pipes. Wasn't until we were bull shitting that I... yes I brought up about the potential break in as indicated by my alarm going off. Then it was "We didn't see any signs of a break in or anything obvious that might have been stolen or rummaged through" I have a 3 year old and a 7 month old... my house is in a constant state of "An F5 just went through here!!!" I tried not to laugh at their comment.
Venger
Dude your house is your castle. F them and their Nazi, goose steppin ways. If your house had been broken into then they should have waited for someone to come out or for you to get home and give them permission to let them in. As far as hookah goes, mine sits next to my chair and I put it away for no one. I will not apologize for doing a legal activity in my home. Go ahead and test my stuff for residue or other things. BTW you had better have a warrant for anything none burglary related and when you don't find anything expect a law suite for wasting my time and presuming I lied to you about my hobby.
Have you never heard "innocent until proven guilty"? It is obvious to anyone with 5 firing neurons in their skull, that they took Stuie as guilty until he had to explain why he wasn't guilty of a crime that no one reported, and that didn't happen, then the call was all up to the cops personal decision, not any fact of law. Then you get to deal with some dumb knob that doesn't know what a hookah is, and he gets to make the call weather you get to go post bail. Fucking great plan. Stuie, been there, I sympathize. except it was fish & game, and one seriously elmer-fud-acting-BLM goon. I got everything from "you must be a terrorist" (no crap, exact quote) because of writing and middle eastern origin of packaging, to standing around for hours (literally) waiting for them do figure out what a hookah is. Cops these days always seem to act like people that got beat up allot in 7th grade gym class. Would have been less of a problem to toss the arms on the bed, and lock your pipes in the safe! Michel
Try explaining the difference between a hookah and a B*** to an officer 9 outta 10 they just won't get it (and confiscate it while they are at it)...

Rani
Scotsman is right though..... As our civil liberties are reduced almost on a daily level it seems, the 3rd graders that grew up to be cops just so they could carry guns and intimidate everybody who beat them silly in grade school are getting bolder and bolder about confronting law abiding citizens for no reason. The more incidents happen, the more likely a Paul Revere is going to find his ass a horse again and it'll be on. 'Rani
Judy Oma
I'm so sorry that this happened to you, Stuie. Any time there is an IMPLIED impropriety when your own children are involved, its going to "angry up the blood". Calm yourself if you can and decide if a complaint is in order. This is effective. In my area, hookah pipes are considered "paraphenalia" and can be confiscated on site. Relatively certain that this is probably not true for you it your location, but you may want to check this out. I have lost 3 pipes - one was confiscated when I was smoking on my front porch with my turkish neighbor. Incidentally it was the Nammor I bought from you The other two were "removed as evidence" and held for "testing" after an intruder, which I apprehended and knocked unconscious in my living room, attempted to steal them and put them in his loot bag along with an XBox and some stereo equipment. The contents of his loot bag, with the exception of the 2 pipes, were returned to me fairly promptly. We were investigated for drug trafficking - thankfully this investigation, although inconvenient, went nowhere My pipes were not returned and were "lost" during this process, but I did find one of them at a local pawn shop and "repurchased" it. Unfortunately, our teaching contracts at a local university were not renewed. Despite this I still have a great deal of respect for our local law inforcement, with the exception of one particular officer. It is a tough job. gramps
Cops can be asshats at times, but just treat them like everybody else. They're human . . . . for the most part. Always be totally honest with them and try not to look too suspicious. Remember, most of the people they have to deal with are actual criminals and they get used to looking at everybody like that. Take it from me, they can be handy to have around. My late wife was a Birmingham police officer. (and no, we didn't play with the handcuffs . . . . . much)

Such a tough job - I wouldn't want to do it. I live in a really tough area at the moment, where most of the people they have to deal with ARE criminals. I have to keep reminding myself of this all of the time.
Stuie
Well there visit wasn't fully over as I soon found out...... Went home for lunch and found my dog running up and down the street, she hopped in the car with me and we went home.... cops didn't close the gate when they came out. My wife and I didn't know. They should of shut the gate, come on!!!!! That's more of a curtious thing than anything... was just kinda pissed, but my dog always comes home when she get's loose. I wasn't mean to the officers at all, I treat everyone with respect until they do something stupid and need correction, and if they happen to be carrying a firearem and tazer, I use a little tact. ChildoftheHorn
I had to deal with this once in my apt complex. ( neighbors apt had fire alarm and the checked the nearby ones). The Guy did ask to see my Taurus Judge when he saw the empty box ( bobberless matte finish ultralite version) and my hubby's Gen 4 glock 34. I did have to explain the hookah pipes and it helped when I showed him the inside of the containers. It also helps that shisha doesn't stink up your house. He was pretty cool. I feel like the cop was in the right in everything that he did there. He noticed that there a three bars near you, he noticed that you WERE speeding. Legally, 5mph is speeding, although you don't normally get pulled over for it. He took all the proper precautions. Also, just because youre wearing a don't drink and drive shirt doesn't mean you couldn't be guilty of it. I've seen a whole bunch of people that have shirts like that wasted out of their mind.
