Persian Qaylan

Recommended Posts

I'm in possession of a Persian qaylan that my late grandfather brought back from his time working the Iranian oilfields in the 70's. It is hand painted cobalt glass jar with a pearwood stem and pewter bowl. It's quite odd looking as far as hookahs go. The stem has multiple sections and is squat rather than elongated like other hookahs. There is no check valve. Unfortunately, some parts seem to be missing. The hose and smoke tube leading into the jar for sure. There is no metal ashplate but the stem has a very wide lip that may well function as one. None the components have grommets.

Is it worth the trouble to buy/make parts for this qaylan or should I just find regular stem for the jar?

Hoses, gaskets (grommets) and ashtrays (metal ashplate) can be found online and easily added to your hookah.

Sounds like you just need to work on the down stem (tube leading into the jar).

I would order what can be easily replaced and maybe a cheap stem to smoke while you work in the old one. Add a down stem and you will have a unique old pipe.

Oh yeah... PICS!

This sounds like a very unique piece - do you have any idea how it was traditionally smoked ? And yes, PICS :)

I found more of it! Instead of a hose it used a rigid wooden tube which is unfortunately broken in two as you can see. The down stem is there. Instead of a completely separate outlet for the "hose", the stem widens at the jar and the hose outlet is in this wide space. The down stem then joins to the narrow end of the stem dividing the chamber into two parts.
