Secrets To Quick-Lights?

hey how do i get quick light coals to not over power the flavor of the shisha? I have al faker grenadine (sp?) which i dense packed with double foil and 1 and half QLs, then again with just one quicklight with one fold foil, tasted nothing but coal.


I also tired with SB code 69, fluff packed with single then double foils and again nothing but coal.

Any tips?

The only brand of QL's that didn't add much if anything to the flavor of my sessions were 3 Kings QL's. Mostly everyone here will simply tell you to switch to naturals.

I am all for naturals, but they are a little hard to light in a dorm room.

Is it possible to light them off a coil burner in your dorm room? People get them over at Walgreens for like $10-$15.

If you must use quicklights, use Chronic Hookah quicklights. While you use the ones that you currently own, make sure that the ENTIRE disk has a coating of ash before putting them on the bowl. If they are still sparking or smoking, even a little bit, do not touch them to the bowl.

Yeah, these are the closest you can get to naturals without getting naturals.

It also depends on the kind of QL. Don't get me wrong, naturals all the way, but the only ones that I've noticed that don't leave the most amount of 'coal' flavor are either 3 Kings of Al Fakher. Also, definitely make sure the whole coal is lit before putting it on the bowl, as previously mentioned.

ok..having read you posts unlike some other folks i have this to say. I'm not sure what a :dense" pack is, but it sounds like you are packing your bowl too tight. If you cant pull air unrestricted through the bottom of your bowl before and after you put the foil on you are packing too tight. This restricts the air flow through the tobacco and causes the top layer of tobacco to burn, giving you a charcoal kinda taste. Also, double foil just means you have to use MORE heat, harder to control and thus...more burning taste. Thirdly, If you are using any sort of QL, break it in half before putting it on the bowl. Put the halves on the edges of the bowl but still on the tobacco if you know what i mean. In other words dont hang them over the edge, just put them at the edge. This still gives you the same amount of heat, but distributes it better so you arent hot spotting one section of the tobacco and burning it. This method takes a little longer to come up to temp, so you wont get your immediate clouds, but in a minute or two you will be good.

Dont use double foil and don't "dense pack" it...whatever that's supposed to mean, I assume that means you're packing it way too tight not allowing proper airflow. Basically all you're doing is burning the top of the tobacco and not actualyl cooking it. Also, the only two brands of quick lights you be looking at are three kings (3K) or chronic hookah (CH) coals. Since you're in a dorm I would probably say use 3K coals and break them in half since CH coals have a strong smell while lighting.

Sorry I am still learning the american terminology for hookah usage. When i say dense pack, I meant it is tighter then it came in the package.

However I make the mistake of not letting the entire coal ash over, it was my first time using QL, I forgot what package I have, but i do remember them being more expensive then al-fakher coals.

Tonight i will try and only use a single foil and let the whole thing ash over first.

But just in case i picked up a 84 pack of COCO nara coals =].

buy a single coil burner for your dorm room maybe?

also using heavy duty foil may help, but yeah use naturals

If its tighter than it is in the package it is way too tight. For an Egyptian, I usually for AF I fluff it up quite a bir and gently blop it in the bowl so its is alittle above the level of the bowl. Then i push it down a little bit and foil it... One layer... Holes wherever but plentiful.

In an Alien and FSB I pack AF exactly like Tangiers. Idk... Seems to work fine to me. Tangiers Phunnels are reserved for Tangiers but Occasionally when i have a terrible day I pack AF2 in my medium... Fluffy.

If i use QLs i use 3k... Ill give my chronic hookah ql's another go.

I would have recommended CH before yesterday, but I tried a brand called Deezer that, once fully lit (and they light in 10 seconds) have NO smell or taste. They smell and smoke while lighting, but that's the only downside

Something i notice a lot about people with Mya bowls is the either over pack or under pack the bowls. i work a lounge and we let people pack there own bowls if they bought a hookah from us and usually about 20 minutes in they say oh well its not hitting right or its harsh or what not and so i instantly look at it first bowl over or under packed most the time its under packed because we tell them sprinkle it in and make sure its full.

So i tell them that and a little trick i do idk about other is once the foil is on and holes done i shake it then blow through the bottom of the bowl and you can tell if its under or over packed by the sound it makes, and even with never doing that before you can just hear what it sounds like if its right or not also if ur using the quick lights cut them in half so u dont have to have it sit off the side split the difference on the bowl and should be great smoke

depending on your bowl the sound it makes will tell you if its over packed or under packed try this i posted on another topic the other day

Oh yeah... don't they sell those at Arabica??? He was showing me those. How are they contrasted to CH Instas?

Yeah that's fair. I just don't have a need for quick lights. Plus, I still have a few rolls of 3 Kings. No need for me to buy more of what I don't use.

Hey thank for all the tips. I picked up a coil burner the hell with QL. I am still getting used to my new KM and I can get the al fakher to be flavorful but my starbuzz shisha is still giving me trouble. There is almost no taste, and i mean none, not charcoal not of burned tobacco or anything. Just plain ol smoke.

I am packing it below the rim and just fluff packing it. How ever some of it does touch the foil. I will try it out of funnel soon i guess, and will try putting in even less shisha then before.

I still have no idea why people are so afraid of of tobacco touching the foil. I find that ALL of the best sessions and easiest heat management come when the bowl is packed FULL, flush with the rim.

from all that i have read, people say starbuzz touching the foil is a nono?
