ChicagoRSX
My buddy picked up a KM after I introduced him to hookah, needless to say he's loving it. But I'm asking for him, does your guys(and gals) tray just sit there, or should there be some sort of grommet to hold it in place. Reason I ask it when you draw off it, it rattles like a beater with oversized subs in the trunk. I know my Mya's ash tray is held in place with the bowl grommet, but not his. I don't know the exact model his is, but it's about 2 feat tall, chrome shank if that helps. Hope this is enough info for me to get an answer. grock
I just have my tray sitting on top similar to your friends. It did rattle occasionally, but it seems to have stopped now, not sure why. If its really bothering him, he could try and find something to try and pad the tray from underneath, such as small foam/gel cut out pads, or electrical tape to pad the tray. Kind of a ghetto rig, but it will stop the rattling. Edited April 21, 2012 by grock

Made me wonder if all KM's were like that.
joytron
Usually its caused by irregularities in the vase that cause the hookah to wobble, shaking the tray.

Ive noticed a diffuser will cut down because it really smooths out the pull. Most the kms ive smoked from had the same tray noise,

littlec
A diffuser will help but there is a few things that can prevent it from getting that far. A. make sure you seal between your base and your stem is as tight as it can be within reason. B. check your base to see if it wobbles, if it does try putting it on some carpet or a thick rug, this will reduce or remove the wobbling and between these two things you should not have anymore tray rattle. MattFerrell
I have something like this stuck to my tray holder. http://www.accoladeplc.com/img/products/full/Post-it%20Command%20Adhesive%20Poster%20Hanging%20Strips%2017024%20147638_2011_01.jpg I forget exactly what it is. But it's like that. But sticky on only one side (which sticks to the tray holder). Allows the tray to then sit atop it, padding it from clanking metal on metal. I just cut to into little squares and stuck And the heat from coals sitting on the tray hasn't been a problem. Works decently. Or maybe something like this would work well, cut into little pieces and stuck to the tray holder, just in case your tray does get really hot: http://www.adlinsulflex.com/heat-resistant-tapes
Chreees
Rattling is actually quite common for KMs. I have had some that did, while others did not. I concur that it is due to base instability, etc... I actually just watched a YouTube video the other day where the guy mentioned this problem and showed what he did to resolve it. He just threw a ring of some sort of felt padding on the tray rest and set the tray on that. Problem solved. And it's removable, nothing permanent, so it's easy to clean the hookah. mushrat
Mine don't, but i use rubber base protectors which probably act as shock absorbers as well. http://www.hookahkings.com/glass-hookah-base-protector-medium-large.html

Not sure what kind I got exactly. Maybe it was better with heat. I have it on my KM Exotica. But I don't use it that much lately. Been using my KM Heart of the Lion more, but don't have any padding on it. I do usually use a diffuser though, just because my hookah is usually on carpet, which doesn't make it very stable. So yeah, heat resistant padding or cloth to pad under the tray, or diffuser seems like best bet
skeetsak
some people have already said this but a base protectore or diffuser may work. you can also super glue or bando the tray to the stem. it will make it had to transport and the tray may get bent but it sure wont rattle

Skoozle
If you want a non-flamable fix, pop a magnet of two under the tray holder. The tray holder should not be ferrous, but if the magnets are strong enough they will attract the tray through the tray holder and hold it tight.
montgoej
Some KMs just rattle I've found. It does seem to be less if you've got a nice, tight seal between the stem and vase like my trimetal does, but my double pear always rattled a bit because it wasn't a super tight fit.
