Arcane
Not too excited about this move, but just wondering if anyone has ever been through the Las Cruces, NM or El Paso, TX area? Anything interesting around there? Google is not making it look pleasant at all!
CO_hookah
El Paso is a decent sized city. Las Cruces, not so much, I'm afraid

Rani
It's absolutely beautiful if you're an outdoors person. Friends of mine from there miss it. I think you're in for a surprise. 'Rani
mustang67n
I was born in Sante Fe and lived in Albequerque for a few years. Definitely a gorgeous state to live in if you like camping. if not though.. it can definitely be rather bland.

Chreees
I've been through there... I don't think I'd like living there, either. But hey, gotta make the best of it, I suppose. Plus you'll be much closer to SD, right? A quick MapQuest search shows it's about a 10-hour drive from Las Cruces to San Diego. I've driven 8 hours straight before, so 10 hours doesn't seem that bad to me really. You could take a few days off every once in a while and visit your fam or Odyssey much easier than from Hawaii (I think). Hell, you may really end up liking New Mexico. Ya never know... When Rani said "I think you're in for a surprise.", my first thought was "It's possible to end up in hell while you're still alive!" Rani
Or for heavens' sake! Quit being a baby and get out and enjoy the gorgeous landscape that is New Mexico. The average person will move 7 times averaging over 100 miles each move, and change careers entirely 3 times in their lifetime. This is just one of your times. 99% of what happens to you is based on your attitude, only 1% on circumstances. There's beautiful vistas, great climbing if your a rock climber, wonderful camping, wildlife, and an amazing artistic, bohemian lifestyle to be had in Las Cruses. Enjoy it and find your way back to the big city later. Could be worse. You could be sitting on a cot on a base outside Kabul. Now THERE'S a desert for you! Arcane
How come you don't spend your time indoors lifting 100+ Kg's? Or how about trying to break someone's arm or knock them unconscious within the first 3 minutes of a fight. I find that enjoyable. Do you? If not, why? Obviously, if I like it...everyone must, right? I've been there, done that and moved across the country and around the world. I've done the outdoors thing, spent time in the deserts in SW Asia....I know what it's like and it's not something I would prefer to do. Why should I, or anyone for that matter, do something they don't like? Just because the situation presents itself?
Arcane
I realize the post seems a bit abrasive...but, it just seems ridiculous to expect anyone to do something that isn't enjoyable for them. My friends have stopped inviting me to go hiking with them over two years ago...for the simple reason, "He doesn't like hiking." Same reason I don't invite some of my friends to board game nights or bar hopping. However, there's tons of bars in downtown Waikiki...so, they should go out and experience it all? No...not if they don't want to.

But seriously, since you're going, are you going to make yourself more miserable by not seeing the positive aspects of it? It's a chance to explore a completely different lifestyle. Mesas to climb, etc. Sometime in the next 40-50 years you're going to have people tell you amazing stories about things they did in places just like New Mexico. Are you going to sit back and have nothing to add? Explore! Indulge in the lifestyle available to you in New Mexico. Try something out of your comfort zone and you might just find out you like it. And the people. "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death." So get out there and feast! 'Rani

Arcane
Sorry Rani. I think the tone of the post escaped me for those few minutes. I probably will check out some of the outdoors-y stuff, just to say I've done it. I think I'm over the initial shock of "Holy crap, I'm going to New Mexico." and moved on to "Ah well. I'm going to New Mexico."

Your hookahs will go over really well. There's a pretty good sized artists community, lots of bohemian and native american influences going on, so it's really the kind of place you are probably going to end up being very happy at. The views really are amazing. Not in the same "green" way Hawaii is, but the colors of the deserts and mesas are unbelievable. Every time I go through there it takes me forever by car because I have to stop at every single rest stop and take pictures, bring out the hookah, and just relax. It's a very cool atmosphere once you start looking into it, I promise. 'Rani

coastlines
I promise it isn't half as bad as most people make it out to be. I lived in San Antonio for 5 years and moved back to El Paso. It really is beginning to develop. Do I plan on staying here forever and ever? Definitely not, but it's a good springboard.
