New hookah! First time buyer!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!My friends and I decided that were going to bite the bullet and buy a new hookah instead of just going to the local hookah bar. So, we know virtually nothing about buying hookahs so I was hoping you guys could help me out. We've probably got like 4 or 5 guys that want in so I'm thinking about possibly getting a two hose but I think we'll live if we only get a one hose. Are budget is probably around $100 give or take. I've heard great things about MYA but have only seen ones with one hose. Any ideas? What would you guys recommend? Thanks!

Check out the selection of two hose hookahs at Social Smoke and HookahCompany. I'm guessing it'll see a lot of use between 5 people so you may not want something as nice as Mya for the risk of being broken, etc. Another option is a pipe from Taqseem; I have the Spider and it works great with a group of people. I got it for $99 shipped a while back, but I'm not sure if that deal still applies to forum members.

If your interested in a Mya, just contact them. Every single hookah on their site has the option of being 1-4 hoses, but you must talk to them first. And for that many people, I think it would be annoying to have only one hookah. Certain ownership issues could arise in the future. I'd personally recomend getting 2x single hose egyptian hookah. They smoke better IMO compared to multihose hookahs. Just my .02

Okay, thanks guys. Getting two single hose hookahs is definately a possibility as we well not always have such a large amount of people. Often times it may even be two or three. As far as height, we don't really have a preference. Are there particular advantages or disadvantages for height? Finally, what are the differences between Egyptian, Bohemian, Modern, and Syrian hookahs? I don't THINK it'd really matter to us.Thanks guys!
what about getting 2, 2 hose QT's. i know you can pickup single hose QT's for $50, so you could do that and get 2 purge valve adaptors and 2 extra hoses.
I was thinking the same thing. All though I'm not too big a fan of purge valve adapters. But 2 QT's would fit exactly into your $100 budget, and give you really nice hookahs, as well as all your starter accessories, assuming you get it from hookah-shisha.

So if we went ahead and bought 2 QT's with purge valve adapters, we could have up to 4 hoses at any one time? Definately a possibility. Anyone got a link to a QT? Tried to do a search on Hookah-Shisha and only came up with the Crown and Mini Orb. Also, anyone got any links on how to setup up purge adaptors and how they work?I'm thinking possibly 4 or 3 hoses may be too many. What about the SS Vega II?Thanks guys!

The crown is the MYA QT, but hookah-shisha have rebranded it. it's the QT with a different name.Same way the mini-orb is the MYA acrylic i think. And regarding purge valve adapters, im not sure, but it just fits on the purge valve, then it's just like a normal hose bit off the stem. put your grommet in then your hose and voila. and also, i think the bearing in the purgevalve acts as an autoseal, but i might be wrong.

Okay, so the QT (Crown or Mini Orb) or the Vega will be good choices? Probably the ones that I'm leaning towards right now. Possibly just the QT with another hose and just keep it a two hose for now. Then down the road if we ever want to get another it wouldn't be too expensive. Thanks guys! Appreciate the help!
my .02 cents is to overlook the QT for now....  make the first hookah a high quality egyptian or Syrian minus auto-Seal. Get a real hookah.. then move on to the specialty sh!t if you feel like it.
Seconding this idea. There is nothing simpler than a single hose egyptian hookah. They are easy to clean, simple to maintain, smoke like nothing other (as long as they're are tight), and give you the most bang for your buck.Think about it logically. If you have a group of people who all want to smoke, do you think everyone would have a better time if everyone has a hose in their hand? I like the single hose hookahs the best, as it gives people a chance to chit chat, which to me is the most enjoyable session.I got a 3hose hookah a while back, and it smoked very well, but we wern't enjoying our sessions nearly as much. Everyone was just busy puffing away.Just something I noticed. This might not be an issue with you, but its definitely the tie-breaker for me.

My thoughts exactly. I had a junior egyptian (very briefly) that I dropped one night where i had a little too much to drink. After that I bought a QT, while the QT is great I sort of regret buying that for a primary hookah esp when I'm smoking with my friends (which is pretty much the only time i really use it.) That said, I'm now going to buy a single hose eqyptian for exactly the reason Yashman gave. Hope this helps...

Okay, thanks guys. I could definately see where just a one hose would be a good idea. Last time we went to a hookah bar we had 6 people and only two hoses and it was definately fun. Also, what are the differences between the different types of hookahs (Egyptian, Syrian, etc.)? Looks like the Egyptian and Syrian's are winners. Was just looking around HS at single host Egyptians and Syrians. Any recommendations? I guess we could always just stick with the QT though and keep it one hose for a while. Then if we feel overwhelmed we could always add another. Too many options! Anyways, I'll talk with my friends and see what they want to do.Thanks.

Egyption and syrian, there are a few little difference's. there's generally a different kind of style look to them, e.g. different vase shape. And also i think they have different fittings for the head (male vs. female)i'm not sure if there's any difference in terms of smoke quality.

I'm VERY happy with my SS minerva and everyone I've smoked with loves it. First night I had it, me and 6 friends just passed it around. Very enjoyable session.

Yeah talked with my friends and it seems that there okay with the single hose idea. Quick question, when you mention auto-seal...what are you talking about? From a quick search it seems like your talking about the hoses but I'm not positive.Been looking at the SS single hose pipes and some of their Egyptian styles as a lot of people seem to recommend them and there priced nicely.

I would reccomend one of the SS hookahs. They come with all youll need for a while. Just add on some more coals and tips and you will be good to go.And auto seal is a bearing inside either the purge valve or the hose valve. When breathing through that hose, or blowing out of the purge, the bearing raises allowing air to pass. When smoking out of another hose on multiple hose models, or when just smoking out of a 1 hose with a purge, the bearing drops down stopping air from coming in that entrance, which would stop the hookah from working

Thank you. So does that mean if I go with one that doesn't have auto seal we have to keep the tip covered when were not smoking it? Also, why have people recommended against auto-seal? Is it more work to clean? Finally, I've been looking at a lot of the SS Sol Hookahs as that's what people have recommended and I didn't see if they mentioned if it was auto-seal or not. Also, any specific recommendations? Been looking at the Sirius and Vega. It seems that 28" or 32" is a pretty good size from what I've read. Thanks again guys! I appreciate the help!

Like with everything, the more moving parts the more that can go wrong or break. I would rather have no auto seal then a broken one ruining my hookah experiance. I have smoked out of multiple hose hookahs, covering the tips is not hard. And my two hose has a rubber plug, so I can turn it into a one hose whenever I want.I guess are that was meant to mean, I don't think auto seals are worth the potential for trouble.

Aurora smokes good, and you don't have to worry about water gettin into the hose :D But ya, it's pretty tall, so carrying it around gets to be a little hastle. Works great otherwise
