Whats with the headaches

Recommended Posts

Ok I have been in this forum for a little time now and I keep seeing the same reoccuring topic of headaches. I smoked another bowl last week and low and behold I went to bed with a headache. Woke up with a headache. Maybe its the coals? Or a certain tobacco. I have smoked really heavy before so I know its not the nicotine. I was thinkig maybe I am not letting the coal get hot enough or something. Any help on this subject would be great. Thanks

I've noticed that when my body is slightly dehydrated, I tend to get headaches more than when I've been taking in a steady amount of water daily. It's atleast worth a shot to drink more water. Only going to do your body good anyways :)Also, smoke on a full stomach, not a starving one.

i've read that ppl get headaches during a hangover is because the alcohol dehydrates the the brain making it shrink away from the skull and the brain membrane, thus causing the paini would assume that if you don't drink enough water during hookah, (which does dehydrate you), it would cause the same effect

my theory on all this i dont know if it makes much sense is the brown paper bag .... remember when you were a kid and you took a brown paper lunch bag and would breath in and out of it very fast then you would get a light headed dizzy feeling from lack of oxygen ? well i think its the same theory ... if you constantly try to pull the smoke from the chamber of the hoookah without enough room to take a deep breathe of some oxygen then your basically doing the brown paper bag trick you used to do as a kid ... only in grown up version

Well, to adress the hangover thing, alchohol dehydrogenase in your liver turns ethonal into acetaldehyde (I am not to up on my organic right now, that may not be spelled right) which is then slowy turned into acetic acid, which is harmless. The build up of acetaldehyde will make you pretty sick, including headaces and stomach problems. Dehydration is a part as well. As for hookah, the large amounts of CO could be making you head hurt. I used to get headaches so now I don't smoke as hard and breathe more and I don't have any problems.

Science. Word. Check it.Nice post Joseph. Science is always good to help fight bullshit. The comments on the wiki are good as well and cover the other prime suspects. Basically it can be alot of things. For me it's usually the Nicotine because I don't smoke very often. :P

I have sort of experimented and found that for me the headaches are due probably from the CO of the natural coals. Probably due to the fact that while heating it up I was exposed to a lot of CO and also probably because I still haven't perfected my technique, so there were still my black bits.Which brings me to ask does any one have a good technique for lighting the naturals? No matter how many times I think the entire thing is lit there is always black bits that become exposed after a few minutes of smoking

So when are you supposed to put the coals on? That could be one of my problems. The quick lights I light them let them fizzle then wait until the brick is almost all white. Then I break it and throw the chunks on the foil. Is this correct? Thanks in advance. Also if its the CO that is causing the headache provlems is this from the coal or the whole process.  Maybe there is a better substitute for coal? Why don't cigarette smokers or cigar smolers get the same headache. I have been smoking cigars for years and never get a headache???Thanks for your help and discussion this is a great open group.

CO is a product of combustion, and it is a poison to humans - so it shouldn't be suprising that it can make ya not feel so hot. It's in any carbon based material that burns. Though make sure the coals are 'ready' before using them. I've not had an issue with the quicklights and headaches - it's always been the nicotine for me. As for quicklight best practice - I'm still learning with coals and heat management. Since properly smoked shisha doesn't usually burn much in the traditional sense, the CO is coming from the heat source - in the case of hookahs - coal.It probably has to do with the nature of coal versus burning tobacco. I'm guessing here - but I'd imagine tobacco produces significantly less CO than a burning coal on a more continuous time frame. In terms of alternate heat sources - it would be possible to create a heated ceramic source with electicity - basically a high temperature vaporizer. But that would be pretty tricky and would have to be a custom hookah or a custom head attachment - but a head attachment with a wall plug or a battery would probably be kind awkward or unstable. I do think it's possible though.

Well, the differance between cigs and hookah is that hookah lasts for much longer. More CO will be absorbed over 45 minutes of hookah smoking then in a 5 minute cigarettes. Then the person usually waits at least a little bit before they light up the next cigarette, so they usually aren't smoking or 45 minutes to an hour and a half straight. Also, do you inhale cigars? You won't get nearly as much CO if you don't inhale. As for lighting coals, I use naturals, and I only smoke outside (which might help your headache, not sitting in a room filled with smoke) I always use a butane backpacking stove. Works amazingly, it is portable, the butane is pretty cheap, and it gets the coals ready quick. I wait until they are either white all over, or if I am smoking outside at night, can actually see the coal glowing red.

I have updated the headache article at HW with the new information from this thread, including the awesome information that Joseph gave us.http://www.hookahwiki.com/index.php?title=Headache

I get headaches occasionally. Generally, I find that I get them right after a small change in the weather from wet to drier. Not too much of a change. I think that everyone is correct to one degree or another, many things will cause headaches, another one is the same principal that you get from caffeine...withdrawl.
