nuschultz
I would say there are 3 main categories of coals:1) Gunpowder Disks - These are your 3 Kings and Golden instant lights. Generally considered the least safe, but easiest to light due to chemicals.2) Japanese Coals - These are usually bar shaped, with each bar having 3 or 4 sections. They are covered in a silver quick light coating, but take longer to get cooking. Probably safer than Gunpowder Disks.3) Natural Coals - These are the lump coals, often come in various shapes and sizes, and are just a standard black coal. More difficult to light. Most people use a torch. Not many additional chemicals, so considered the healthiest.NOTE: DO NOT USE BBQ CHARCOALS! EVER! THESE PRODUCE HARMFUL CARBON MONOXIDE WHICH WILL KILL YOU. DizzyGuy
Up to you, really. Quick lights are nice because... well, they're quick... But it really is up to your smoking style... I guess experiment with them and what ever works best for you

Sonthert
Yeah, like the rest of the charcoal doesn't produce Carbon Monoxide! I think the real problem with BBQ coal is the lighting agents they put in it.Natural coals fall under two categories, actual natural coals and extruded, shaped bars of charcoal. I think both are bad, the extruded, formed bars (like Nour fingers, for instance) are slightly worse because of binders in them. No charcoal is good for you.
