How To Start?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.
I decided it is time to start smoking hookah. I wanted to buy something cheap for the beginning and I'm wondering if these hookahs are any good. Would one of those be good to start with?

Also, I'm wondering if I should smoke the normal shisha tobacco or the soex melassa. I would appreciate any feedback

Thanks,
Draggy

No. Both of them are chinese generic crap. Please don't waste your money on either of them as they will rust away in 2 weeks. :) I am glad that you joined here before buying either of those, because many people don't, and it's a bad feeling telling someone that they have wasted their money.

Could you tell us your budget? We'd be able to help you much better that way.

By the way, Welcome to HF! :)

youre gonna have to shell out more than 10 pounds mate :D also, you really should look around locally, we dont have the best online deals in europe :P well, not sure about uk sites, check around google a bit and see if theres anything you like, youre generally gonna be recommended myas or kms as great hookahs to start with, later on you might wanna start collecting like some members on here lol, though Im too broke to be one of them :P

Try looking for a mya QT, ya they are small and don't have all the glamour of some of the more expensive ones. They are a great little pipe. It will get you in cheap with quality. Also spend a little extra and get a nammor hose. They will make your experience much more pleasurable.

Starter pipe, definitely Mya QT. They are small enough to not take up much room, smoke great, and they are built with quality materials.

I agree with upgrading the hose though, the mya hoses (and any other standard hose) have metal coils inside of them and eventually they rust, not to mention they are very restrictive with the draw making the smoke sessions slightly uncomfortable (at least after smoking for a long time)

It's if a new hose isn't in your budget, they Mya hose will be fine, just don't wash it, ever. Those hoses will usually last a few months if not longer if you keep them dry (hang it up when your not using it, and never wash it)

^^ I'll go with that. You can find km's there, but expect to spend upwards of 50 pounds. Also, it's tough to find hookah tobacco in UK, even though it is worlds better from herbal which we would never recommend. May be someone from UK can help you about the whereabouts of these tobacco shops, but I've read various times that you should be able to get some if you go to any Indian/Middle Eastern grocery market, but even then it won't be cheap.

Most smokers living in UK who smoke regularly find it a much cheaper and efficient option to just order from US if I am not wrong.

Okay, now I know what to look for.
So the cheapest Mya QT I found is this one: http://www.shishamar...id_product=149 . Considering the exchange of the hose ( http://www.ebay.co.u...84&cmd=ViewItem ), it would cost about £45.
I also found a smaller version of QT, the only difference seems to be the height: http://www.shishamar...?id_product=134 => £32. Would it do its job or is it again some cheap crap?

The reason I don't want to spend much is because I have never smoked hookah before, I would love to try it though. ;)

Again, thanks everyone for helping me in making my first steps in the hookah world. :D Edited by Draggy28

The Mya QT is a specific model made by Mya. That "smaller" one is not actually a "QT", but a "Petit" . Look here: http://www.hookahshop.co.uk/hookah-shisha-by-mya-c-293.html. Before buying anything, drop by a hookah lounge and rent a hookah to see if you actually like it. If you don't like it, you won't have hookah stuff lying around to get rid of. Another thing to remember is that Mya hookahs are made of chromed brass, not stainless steel. For some screwy reason this error continues to be propagated by hookah sellers.

I recommend the mya QT or the petite i love the petit smokes great with any type bowl just please dont purge the hookah and ruin your bowl. also any hookah under 20euro is gonna just be junk and probably rust and break and smoke horrible etc...but sometimes you can get rarely lucky RARELY lucky and have it last so yah just save up and wait to be honest

I think the best thing to do would be, as noodle said, go to the hookah bar and try smoking shisha before buying anything. I'll try and do that first and if I actually like it, I'll save up some money for one of the Mya hookahs.

I'd be grateful if anyone else would share their expierience on starting smoking hookah. This really helps. ;)

Yah, I totally started at a lounge, you ought to go check out some places before you buy stuff, keep in mind though that it has to be a decent lounge, ive had such crappy sessions in a lounge, then magically at home the same tobacco tasted 100% different, so keep that in mind :)

definitely try hookah before you buy a pipe.

If you do decide to buy a pipe, however, stray away from the Mya brand pipes that say "eco" or "econo" etc. the first mya QT you linked is an econo line, and these are Mya's low end versions of their quality pipes, basically they just use low grade materials to make the same pipes, and they last just as long as any other generic no-name chinese manufacturer.. Not worth the money.

If it says eco/econo, etc, stray away

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. What do you think about Mya Petite?
I have smoked from a mya petite, and it was exactly like how my QT smokes (My QT is my daily smoker by the way, and I get some pretty awesome sessions on it so if it means anything, my opinion of mya pipes is very good). Basically all mya pipes will smoke the same, more or less. I have smoked from mya QT, econo QT, razo, chic, vento, petite, and mozza 2, and they all smoked the same as far as I am concerned. I have personally owned the QT and the econo QT, and as I mentioned before, and as Nate mentioned, they are just made from low grade materials and tend to deteriorate very fast.

My personal opinion is that if you buy a mya, buy a small one because it will smoke exactly like their big ones, and will be much cheaper.

Thanks a lot. Mya Petite seems to be a good choice for the beginning then. ;) It's much cheaper than the QT.

The last question I've got is about the harmfulness of smoking hookah tobacco. If, let's say, I smoke twice a week for an hour or two, would it have some negative consequences? I'm also wondering if smoking soex molasses would be healthier. Edited by Draggy28

Smoking is smoking and is not 'healthy'. However I've not noticed any side effects from smoking other than headaches from long sessions of overly sweet flavors (and quicklight coals). And if I smoke a lot in a weekend, my throat can get sore for a day or two. By a lot, I mean 5 or more hours of continuous smoke each day.

This is just my experiences, I'm not a Dr.

To reiterate, and to add to what Nate and Pavo said, smoking anything is bad for you as our lungs are not meant to inhale smoke, but we do a lot of things our body is not meant for (liquor, greasy food). It all comes down to personal decision and responsibility.

I work out 5 times a week and currently smoking 2-3 bowls per day (2 hours each), and have not yet experienced any negative effects (breathlessness, clumsiness, pains of any kind) that I can write down to smoking hookah, but still, I am not in any kind of delusion that it is not harmful to my body in any way. I just enjoy it, so I choose to do it. Speaking from my own experience, I don't think it's even close to how harmful cigs are for you btw.

Gooo Pavo!! That's what I am talking about! I can (and have) outrun most of my friends, and I am not in the best of shape. The funny thing is that my elder brother who smokes cig often comments on how harmful hookah is (quoting the WHO study), and claims that I am in denial when I try to put forth the facts, but still he can't run as much as me because he goes out of breath, and he hates smoking cigs but can't quit, while I really really enjoy my smoking hobby, and can (and again, have) quit it for weeks without feeling any withdrawal effects. That alone inclines me to believe that it is in no way as harmful as cigs are.
