I'm Confused. Lol

Recommended Posts

I been reading stuff saying that smoking shsiha for one session is like smoking 50 cigarettes in terms of tar and nicotine?

WOW. Is this bs or true stuff? I'm confused cuz I though shisha was like 0 tar and .05% nicotine or something like that? Edited by bruceg

People in these studies and anecdotal evidence believe the same contents are in both smoke, and it's not or the misinterpret it because it's Volume they are referring to and think it's "literally" is like smoking 50 Cigarettes. The figure I seen thrown out is 100 all the time.

I would think if it was THAT bad, then half the middle east would be dead from lung cancer and heart failure beings like 90% of these people smoke shisha every day. lol

I'm prety sure this Is all from people who know NOTHING about hookah, they probably only see how much is packed into a bowl. If you think about it, i guess some bowls might look like 50 cigarettes worth. I mean a bowl for me is usually anywhere from 30-50 grams, i'd have to guess a cigarette is about a gram worth. They're probably just looking at it quantity wise, not nicotine content, besides, how many bowls do you smoke down to ash like a cigarette does.

Also, I thought that for tar to be produced the tobacco has to be BURNED? When smoking shisha, it's really just heated, not burned.

They're pretty much going by smoke volume but smoke volume is far from the biggest issue. It's what's in the smoke that counts. Cigarettes have over 600 chemicals intentionally added. On top of that, you're breathing in burning paper, so I'd definitely say even a single cigarette is MUCH worse for you than hookah. Nobody is ever going to tell you breathing in anything except clean air is good for you, but if you're going to use a tobacco product, hookah is probably the least damaging. Another thing I've mentioned before, is that if I take an inhale off a cigarette, I cough - a lot. Hookah never triggers a single cough. So I'm reasonably confident my body would complain if hookah were damaging it dramatically. And after about 10 years smoking? Not a peep of a complaint. Hell, I have more lung issues if I eat dairy than from my hookah!

what people seem to also forget is that...in the cigarettes filter there is little tiny particals of fiber glass. so youre also breathing that in. and yah chemicals are no bueno. I know what goes into say Tangiers compared to what goes into cigarettes. at least i know whats going in it.

Speaking of. Are their any videos of any companies like Tangiers or Fantasia, etc? I'd be interested in watching videos in their factories or where ever it's made.

Eric would never allow video to be taken of his production process at Tangiers, haha. Other (bigger) companies, maybe. But no, none exist as of right now when it comes to the hookah tobacco companies. Only video I can think of that really shows the production process of something hookah related is the one featuring Elmas hookahs and hoses in Turkey.

As you mentioned, the Middle East is excellent proof to show that hookah is NOT the same as cigarettes (they'd have rampant health problems if hookah was as bad as these people are saying it is). Hookah tobacco is cooked, cigarettes are burned. The combustion is what leads to tar being present. People who say you get tar with hookah are just idiots, or they weren't doing it properly in their study (they were burning the tobacco). I wish there was a way to better get the TRUE knowledge out there about hookah.

It's the anti-smoking Nazi's. If they could they'd eradicate tobacco from the face of the earth. Instead they're trying to tax us into having to give it up. I say fuck 'em..... I warned the last guy I caught putting an TobaccoFreeCA flyer on my car at a little liquor store that sells cigarettes and hookahs I'd have him arrested for vandalism and sue the organization if they did it again. I considered stronger words but threatening to bust a cap in his ass is kinda dated and a little bit frowned on by our local law enforcement.

Nice! lol
I like the "bust a cap" route, but yeah law enforcement isn't too big on that. As far as the taxes and "tobacco free" crap goes: While I think cigarettes are disgusting AND absolutely horrible for you, people should be able to choose whether or not they want to smoke. No one should be making that decision for them by means of making it illegal or taxing the piss out of it.

its a pointless subject to talk about we've talked about it like 1,000 times. I think there is about 10 posts on general discussion about this. and if you google the subject im sure tons of articles will pop up

I found this on the wikipedia.

The average hookah session typically lasts more than 40 minutes, and consists of 50 to 200 inhalations that each range from 0.15 to 0.50 liters of smoke.[sup][44][/sup][sup][45][/sup] In an hour-long smoking session of hookah, users consume about 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke of a cigarette. The chemical compositions of cigarette smoke and hookah smoke are different, however, as the workings of the charcoal in the modern hookah causes the tobacco mixture to be heated to a lower temperature, as opposed to the higher temperature in a cigarette where the tobacco is directly burnt. Consequently, the potential health effects of hookah smoke are expected to be very different.[sup][46][/sup][sup][47][/sup]
Despite a different chemical composition of the smoke, it is expected that heavy and long term use still has the potential to lead to diseases generally induced by tobacco, notably chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.[sup][48][/sup] Mixtures with lighter concentrations or tobacco-free alternatives (e.g. tobamel, molasses and glycerin-soaked stones) are widely available and aim to reduce the negative effects of tobacco.[sup][49][/sup]
A 2008 aetiological study on hookah smoking and cancer led by a group of Pakistani researchers[sup][50][/sup] found that overall serum CEA levels (as a biological marker for cancer) in exclusive hookah smokers, who had been using weight equivalents of up to 60 cigarettes of tobacco in daily sessions for decades, were higher than in non-smokers but substantially lower than those recorded in cigarette smokers considering the same amount of tobacco. The study also concluded that heavy and non-moderate hookah smoking (2–4 daily preparations; 3–8 sessions a day; 2 to 6 hours net daily smoking time) substantially raises CEA levels.[sup][50][/sup]

And this is the link to a study that looks more serious than a bunch of college students tinkering with a hookah and measuring the smoke volume.
