muse435
I know there are many arguments/opinions on the length of the tube above the vase. My question is; why not have the tube go further into the vase, thus passing through more water? I was curious if anyone has tried this and/or have opinions about it. cheers
Skoozle
If your down tube goes deep into the water it will be very difficult to pull air through the system. Your draw would be restricted. Try it with your hookah, Put way too much water in it and see how it feels to smoke through it. In all honesty, if your smoke isn't good when it leaves the bowl, there's not much the stem is going to do to fix it. water is going to do even less. Bubbles are very efficient at containing a lot of volume in the least amount of surface area. Not much of your smoke actually touches the water, but floats up, surrounded by the other smoke, in the bubble.
Arcane
Because the water doesn't really do much in the first place? Also, the more water above the opening of the downstem, the harder the draw will be....the difference might not be dramatic...but, it's there. Pavo21
And that is why they don't make hookahs with the downstem all the way to the bottom of the base lol
Chreees
Yeah, in a couple of my Syrian setups (the ones with trumpet vases), I can't have the water level very high. In fact, I barely have them submerged (about half an inch). It's never an issue for me. Actually works best this way because Syrians offer a bit of a restrictive draw anyway. So yeah, I agree that water level has an effect on restrictiveness of draw due to how much water the smoke has to pass through. Obviously, it takes more effort to pull it through more water, and vice versa.
mattarios2
I personally kind of like it with a little extra water filled. I like it about 1.5 inches of water into the pipe rather than .5-1 inches. I feel like when it is .5 inches in you don't get the same feel. Low amounts of water gives you a light bubble, I like to feel the bubbling and know I am ripping on a water pipe. Arcane
I add as much water as I can get away with. Not sure why I do it, but that's what I do.

mattarios2
I have never found a lot of water over the downstem to really make it much harder to inhale ... I must have iron lungs.
Pavo21
Iron lungs are nice aren't they? But I just notice it is a bit more restrictive with more water
mattarios2
yeah they are, but I find with more water once it gets going, it is easier to keep going if that makes sense. When I have little water over the down stem, it is easy to pull, but you have to continuously suck that damn hose so hard for smoke. That may be just in my mind but it is what I experience. Coyote
the lungs don't have muscles... its the diaphragm that uses suction to empty and fill the lungs. The lungs just have capacity/volume. So if you talking about being able to pull big hits when there is more restriction then you would actually have an "iron thoracic diaphragm"! On topic... I don't like restriction because I dont to have to work that hard lol. I do enough crunches and abdominal breathing for work... when its time to play I want no effort of any kind.
