insidius
Sounds like I either need to get a mini or get some Japanese coals (or CH ones). I've literally tried everything else. Either the flavour sucks or the clouds suck. I want both!

If it's some brand of coconuts, try stonehenging them (standing them on their smallest side), or cut them into halves, or even fourths. Link in my signature on how to do that. Last time I tried using CH, which was a version back, I didn't like them as much as Razans or Coconaras/Cocomazayas. Japs make a mess and you have to fiddle with coals every 20-30 minutes (piggybacking to light the new ones off of each other). They're excellent heat for Tangiers, but I'd rather only have to mess with coals every hour or so by using cocos instead.
insidius
I'm using 2 Coconaras. I've tried the methods in your sig and several other methods. At first I used the coals full on, then I tried half off the bowl, then I tried stonehenging them, which worked best for the flavor, but the clouds were basically nonexistent. I guess I'll try cocos in half next. Should I go with 2 or 3 halves?

I was all about japs there for a bit but once I realized how much more I was paying and how much more of a hassle it was compared to just lighting new cocos on my stove every hour, I switched back to cocos. Your idea is pretty good for making the japs last longer while giving yourself easier heat management I'm sure.

Worse then any quicklites I EVER used. To the point it had that effect on me that burning tires/rubber has on most people.
king_lunchb0x
At first I wasn't into splitting coals, but now it's so much better with heat management. No matter the coal, except for silver lights...they tend to be low heat anyways.

dizzbizz
I had the bad stench from CH too. I use one half of ccn and two quarters haha. Seems to be the amount that works on my Pico. I found this out after a half broke when I tossed it in my coal carrier. I place them as if i had three halves.

Worse then any quicklites I EVER used. To the point it had that effect on me that burning tires/rubber has on most people. [/quote] The QLs smell aweful. But they light quick and with no effort, once they are lit they don't seem to be a problem at all. If someone is going to use CH QLs I suggest just making sure you light them outside and that they are fully light before placing them on the bowl. When I use CH coals I use the natural coals that you have to light on the stove. The CH nats that are currently being sold are "new and improved" (as noted on the box). Compared to the last batch and CCN coals the new and improved CH nats burn at a lower temperature, last longer, and produce MUCH less smell. IMO, this makes them they ideal natural coconut coal for Tangiers. As with all batches of natural coconut coals there will be some minor variations due to seasonal effects on the coconut trees and how they are processed however overall I prefer CH nats. I have noticed a change in Coconara coals over the last year or so... different color, quicker and higher temperature burning, and NASTY smell. If I'm smoking Tangiers I steer clear of the CCN. Right now I'm using Fumari coals but they are such a mess. I don't know how much longer I can stand it...
