Hookah Physics: Why Doesn't Hookah Smoke Travel Upwards?

Recommended Posts

It's the weight of the smoke. It's cooking vapor not burning smoke. Think of it like Fog, The density of the smoke is heavier than air.

Not sure if I am missing the point of this post completely, but isnt it because you are sucking in on the pipe? hahah

On another related part though: Sometimes you'll actually see little puffs of smoke travel upwards out of the foil, though my thoughts are it is mainly through negative pressure inside the pipe pushing a small amount of smoke out. However, I feel smoke will just linger in the pipe, at a botany pressure, until it once again has suction applied.

If you overheat the smoke will start coming up from the top of the bowl, the thing is when you inhale the smoke, air flows over the coals, heating them up, at that point the smoke really starts to form and it is instantly dragged down into the pipe. Now if you were to just cover up your air valve and blow in the pipe (only gently though, dont want an accident) there will be a bit of smoke coming out up on top. The smoke youve inhaled and breathed out has already been cooled to the point where it wont travel upwards :)

Vaporization is different from burning... One is a phase transition, the other a combustion.

There are particles in vapor... Nicotine, flavor, water, whatever sweet-base, that are subject to gravity. Gravity pulls things toward earth.

lol...

the density of the hookah smoke is denser then air. Density is measure in mass/volume. Heat affects density by affecting the volume. This the relation of the PV=nRT. So the higher the T if other factors remain constant, V gets bigger. With a larger V density gets smaller.

This how ever a very basic layout to show a relationship, it gets very complex very fast, you want to talk about the contents of M and V.
